Like OCULUS does a really good job using patient editing, simple structural tricks, and internal narrative logic to make some pretty rote horror imagery seem fresh, but man, the sappy, expository wrap-up really sinks this.
Is Mike Flanagan a child of divorce? Cause some really fucked up shit happens to parents in his movies.
I was sure the dad had something to do with the weird shit that was happening because I don't trust grown ass men with long hair unless it's Jason Momoa. I always trust Jacob Tremblay so I knew the evil child trope won't strike here. Must be the hippie dad, I thought.
And Mike please stop making me feel like I am blind with hidden things in the background. Before I realize what the fuck I am looking at it's gone. Each time I have to drag my ass out of bed, rewind, stand in front of TV screen and try to SEE. It’s so much effort, man.
Mike Flanagan has showed a lot of talent and promise in the horror genre with his first three features, but sadly not much of it was used in "Before I Wake". It's not a bad film at all, it's just so mediocre. The three lead performances are all quite solid. The film has a few creepy scenes and images, and there's actually some surprisingly touching moments sprinkled in. But where this movie is held back is in its story. It's actually kind of original but it gets repetitive after a while and makes very little sense in the end. The film also lacks in scares, their was never a moment where I was truly all that afraid, and unlike Flanagan's…
This isn't really a horror movie. This is a dark, magical realist fable in the skin of a horror movie. Taken on those terms it works fantastically well.
Mike Flanagan once again demonstrates masterful control over tone and pacing. He is among the best working in the field of horror right now.
Before I Wake is an original story written by Flanagan and his frequent cohort Jeff Howard. It's about a little boy named Cody with a gift that allows his dreams to become reality. This causes wonder and amazement in those who witness it. Until he has a nightmare. Those become real as well and they are just as dangerous as his normal dreams are enchanting.
Cody has spent…
The thing about this movie is that the story is actually really good, and pretty damn sad. What's also sad is that the experience is ruined by poor CGI and a bunch of cheap jump scares. Still, I'm giving this a positive rating because between the story and Kate Bosworth's heartfelt performance Before I Wake can be worth seeing once for horror fans.
Those were literally the worst CGI butterflies.
Kate Bosworth has Jennifer Garner lips, but a botox forehead.
This was a rip-off of Nightmare on Elm Street with a few things that played out differently. I'm sorry, but what was the point?
I was going to complain about the monster too, but the end sort of wrapped it up nicely.
As an exploration of the emotional turmoil of loss, Before I Wake succeeds thanks to the excellent performances on display, but as a fantasy thriller, it ends up falling short because of Mike Flanagan's surprisingly feeble handling of the horror aspects of the story, and the way it ends leaves the viewer feeling irked.

DAY SEVEN: "A movie about dreams or nightmares that isn’t from the Nightmare on Elm Street series"
Didn't anyone in this movie watch A Nightmare on Elm Street? When a child doesn't want to go to sleep you let the kid stay the fuck up! Always!
In Before I Wake, a couple whose child passed away, fosters a child with a troubled past whose dreams and nightmares both come to life. This film has some fun jump scares and Alien Skeletor Face is a creepy looking bad guy. This movie is fine. You'll watch it, you'll…
up until the last 7 minutes of this movie I thought the villain was called the Kinkerman and I'm still having a conniption about that
I can't understand Before I Wake bad critics, or maybe I'm too empathic or I understand Mike Flanagan too well
I enjoyed much of it...until it decided to turn into a superhero origin story and forget the horror that it worked to create.
man this had me thinking deep about the little details and it was for nothing. this movie totally shit the bed.
this film... reeks. REEKS. the stench, is unbearable, okay. if i were to watch it again, which hopefully never happens, i would need nose plugs.
This was the worst thing I have ever seen in my entire life. God help those that created this monstrosity, I would rather die in the next second than ever see this movie for a second time even if I caught a glimpse of it by accident.
this movie was DEPRESSING ASF, the acting was good and i LOVE jacob tremblay, but the pacing of the plot was weird and so was the storyline in genera
This movie was good! But the pacing of the plot was weird and I still have a lot of questions. Good jump scares though.
