Caught this in 35mm and just want to get it out there that nothing has ever looked this good on film, can’t imagine seeing it any other way.
This blends traditional filmmaking with new wave elements and feels like nothing else out there. Everything that happens after the bowling scene is so vulnerable. Vincent Gallo seems to have a relatively toxic fanbase (for the most part) and from what I know about him I can’t say I’m a huge fan but I also can’t deny his artistic devotion. I’ll have a lengthy amount to say about this eventually but I’m glad I liked this and am open to discussing it more.
This shouldn't work. It should be deplorable, convoluted, annoying, and pretentious. It should make me feel sick, I should hate this, I should never want to look at Vincent Gallo, and I should wash this away from my life. But I just can't. It just works. It's magical really. Brilliant performances all around, wild stylistic choices, and a moving tale of a horrible protagonist (that you somehow feel bad for (sometimes)) slowly learning to accept, take responsibility, and love. this movie keeps on haunting me because people are so suffocating in their love for it. it's a piece of shit. the worst defense i've seen of buffalo '66 is "it's good because it's very revealing of gallo's mental state." you are saying that a movie that romanticizes the abuse of a teenage girl & reduces her to nothing but a device for the protagonist's redemption is good because it reveals that the director is a lonely narcissist. incredible insight. i'm not really concerned with arguments that billy deserves love, i'm more concerned with the willingness to accept that this love comes from his teenage victim. it's nearly impossible to shake the traumas of being abused / the histories that made…

One of the most brutally pathetic and lonely characters from New Hollywood (with a generational history of losing and abuse) is genuinely listened to and seen and given the opportunity for a future not of alienation and violence but of romance and grace. And unlike the many characters of his ilk from that era, despite all of his conditions pointing in the other direction, he actually takes it. One of the most staggeringly generous and beautiful movies I've ever seen. Going to be thinking about those two musical fantasy moments for a while.
