Oh, lord. Looks like I still have one unwatched Bruno Mattei flick in my collection. He is without a doubt my least favorite filmmaker. Garbage even by Eurotrash standards. He makes Joe D'Amato look like Antonioni, Jess Franco like Fellini.
Mondo Cannibal is, as every review here can attest, a rotten and high-strung plagiarism of Cannibal Holocaust. However, unlike Mattei's other post-9/11 cannibal epic, In the Land of the Cannibals, Mondo doesn't have the advantage of simultaneously ripping off Predator. Visually, this has all the style of a bad telenovela.
Is there anything good about it? Well, the locations (when not green screened) were lovely to look at, as were the two leading ladies, and the gore was extremely un-lovely to look at. Terrible everything else aside, I felt strangely compelled by how odd every second of this film is.
Awful, yes. Recommended, no. I'm swearing off any more from this director, for real this time.
