A Best Picture-winning historical war drama that sees the troops off to battle, but stays at home to focus on the domestic struggles of those left behind.

With seeing all those horses on the cover, I had always thought Cavalcade was derivative of calvary, and that this would be a war movie. But that is mostly not the case, and instead Cavalcade is defined as 'A formal procession of people walking, on horseback, or riding in vehicles.'
All you need to know about the plot is noted in the opening title cards, which I must not have read very carefully.
