Quite possibly the most honest, believable, dare I say authentic…? superhero origin story I’ve watched.
It’s not even the “found footage” angle that makes it feel believable. It’s the great dialogue, good acting, and characters you can identify with – characters whose reactions to supernatural events seem the most… natural.
Chronicle is a brave movie. It’s not afraid of taking the road less travelled. There were a couple of moments when I genuinely admired the creators for trying something different that could have backfired. It never did.
Lastly, and surprisingly, this movie is not about good and evil. It’s about power and powerlessness. We all grapple with the latter, and most of growing up might be learning to accept things that are outside of our influence. You might think that having superpowers would fix that. It turns out, not really: now you just have two things you can neither understand nor control.

This movie is great because it's exactly what would happen if some teenagers got superpowers. We all think we'd be the hero, but it's way more likely we'd be Andrew. Some of the dialogue is super cheesy, the epilogue is unnecessary, and some of the effects are starting to age, but overall this is great and totally holds up on a rewatch, 7 years later.

A dark and fascinating character study, this found-footage sci-fi action drama was such a treat. Three high school friends Andrew, Matt, Steve, played by Dane DeHaan, Alex Russell, Michael B Jordan, make a mysterious discovery that gives them superhuman abilities. As their powers become stronger and harder to control, while dealing with teen problems, the antagonist side emerges. This film works in so many ways. The chemistry and performances between the leads were fantastic. Amazing character development and depth with an outstanding story arc. The film's depiction of how villains were created felt disturbing real. The technical found footage aspect and visual effects look incredible for something from 10 years ago. I did think the footage from the vlogger girlfriend was a bit weird but serves a purpose to continue Matt’s story when they were not all together. And the ending wasn't strong. It still manages to do a lot with this genre and was a fulfilling film to watch.
