Die Hölle, Die Hölle - Inferno
The glistening giallo vibes of the first act happens to be one million percent my jam... from that point on I was gladly on board with this pulpfest serial killer thrill-ride. Although there’s a plotpoint towards the second act I’m not fully on board with, Cold Hell is (at this point) perhaps my favorite of all the Shudder exclusives... Violetta Schurawlow pummeling jerks was the perfect way to start my day.
Also, I love how the detrctive looked like every detective that’s a side character in a giallo with at least 40 minutes of screen time.
Based on what I had heard, I was expecting this cat and mouse thriller to be something along the lines of Mute Witness and it does have that vibe in some ways, but it’s also been forever since I’ve seen that so I can’t say exactly to what extent. I can definitely say that this has a much more kickass heroine and I could watch Violetta Schurawlow beat the ever loving crap out of awful men all day. I’m pretty sure this one is grittier. I seem to remember that one being more stylish whereas this one just doesn’t have time for all that.
There are some scenes that had me on the edge of my seat so this maybe wasn’t the best choice of movie to watch when I’m trying to wind down, but it’s really well done and totally worth checking out.
This is my kind of girl. She's a beauty!
Works hard, fights hard, loves hard! Probably parties hard too.
Its no-ones business what she's been through, you do get her back story in nuggets, but she's not telling. At times her dark secrecy is frustrating, she wont tell anyone what is happening, divulge the reasons for her actions. She's sorting this out and do not get in her way.
The serial killer is a woman-hating nutjob with a god complex. Oh happy days he crossed paths with Ozge.
The cop another beauty, one more touch that makes this such a good watch.
Splendid!
“You only have one God and it’s very, very small.”
An excellent horror/thriller in THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO vein. But I liked this one much more than those.
Özge Dogruol is a great character and her story and ordeal deserves to be seen.
Really tense and excellent stunt work. Highest.possible.recommendation.
It’s available exclusively on Shudder.
A midnight movie banger - part neo giallo, part martial arts/car crash mayhem, part odd melodrama, all wild female rager against systemic, patriarchal sexism. Hits one minor bump in the back half but is otherwise a total torch and run piece of genre cinema.
Cold Hell is my first outing with Austrian director Stefan Ruzowitzky, who works alongside regular TV writer Martin Ambrosch. Both have past films that have caught my eye, but thanks to Shudder picking up this one, I've finally gotten a chance to check out their work. Though I remember seeing some positive reviews for this one on release, I didn't get around to it then for one reason or another, but after seeing it on a few "best of 2018 so far" lists, I figured it was time to give it a go.
Cold Hell tells the story of a hardened taxi driver (Violetta Schurawlow) who witnesses the latest attack of a serial killer targeting prostitutes, thereby becoming a target…
Probably the surprise package of Monsterfest, and it was originally at the bottom of my list to see. A gut-punching, and slickly crafted German serial-killer crossed neo-noir thriller with ingrained giallo cues, religious motivations, political red tape, telling social/cultural themes and a no-holds-barred, headstrong central performance from the excellent Violetta Schurawlow as a Turkish immigrant, Özge, trying to make a life for herself in her adoptive Vienna.
She’s a quiet, stubborn individual who works a taxi driver, attends evening classes and puts in the hard work training as a Thai-boxer. Don’t get on her bad side, as she takes no bull from anyone and she’ll let you know what real pain is! Also battling through persistent racism and sexism, the…
I'm going to kill you.
-Özge Dogruol
The film’s first act gave me the impression that this was going to be the old cat-and-mouse scenario between a serial killer and a witness to one of his murders. Soon enough you discover that it’s a much more layered film with a complex female lead at the center of it played by Violetta Schurawlow. A non-practicing Muslim taxi driver that also dabbles in kickboxing who seems to have some anger issues.
I’ll admit that character description comes off as improbable and a possible shallow attempt at creating a badass female character, but it comes off as gritty and makes sense when more of her backstory is revealed. Not only that but when…
52 Years in 52 Weeks 2020: Film #43
This Kommissar Rex spin-off is surprisingly dark and the dog is barely in it.
I like this movie sooooo muchhhh. The fight choreography is unmatched and the acting from Ozge especially is incredible. I could watch 100 minutes of this woman elbowing shitty men in the face.
I wasn't expecting much out of this movie based on the plot. A woman accidentally sees a woman who was just murdered and can tell that the killer can see her. Özge doesn't seem to trust anyone and the police are no help when they pretty much dismiss the idea that the killer will come after her next. It sounded like just another cat and mouse type of movie. It actually is, but it was a lot more thrilling than I thought it was going to be. What made this movie fun was watching Özge get mad and fight back. At first, she is just fighting to get away, but once she goes on the attack then that changed things for the better. It made that squish at the end very satisfying indeed.
Why couldn't Cold Hell deliver the MMA Turkish immigrant vs. suited male privilege serial killer knockdown dragout brawl promised in the premise? The movie feels bloated and flails down melodramatic neon alleys littered with family trauma and romantic cop longing. Maybe the impressive opening featuring garish giallo lighting, slick Eurocity streets, and filthy apartment set design set my expectations too high? More killer less filler, please!
In my recent watch history I don't think I've shipped anyone as intensely as I did Christian and Özge.
Ending could have been better but the rest of the movie was a solid serial killer, cat and mouse thriller!
Loved it!!!!!
Awesome movie
Great story and characters
Touched upon many important subjects and did it very very well
Imagine if Ken Loach directed The Raid. This isn’t quite that film but it would be cool, right?
Recalling the best 70s horror/thrillers, this a tight as hell, intense, grim film. Led with a tough-as-nails, but heartfelt performance by Violetta Schurawlow, Cold Hell calls back to the bloody thrillers of the 70s, but weaves in contemporary issues for a strong new take on an established formula. Despite some plot points that requires some flexibility from the viewer, this movie has enough smarts and serious intent to pull off its premise, and maintains its tension throughout, making it an effective film. Definitely recommended for fans of giallos or cold-war era thrillers, and brutal revenge flicks.
Cold Hell is an excellent thriller, with solid performances, fleshed-out characters, and great direction.
The tone and style of the film changes between the first and second acts, and it works very well.
Small bits of the protagonist’s past are progressively revealed, creating a character with a surprising amount of depth.
The fight choreography in Cold Hell is impressive.
This film is very well executed, and definitely worth watching.
Quite an effective mashup of thriller, indie drama, action & (a bit of) horror. Schurawlow carries the movie well with her stony, determined exterior and the lurking fear inside that rises to the surface—sometimes as fear, sometimes as rage.
It's a great change of pace for this sort of "woman in peril from a serial killer" story. Comes apart a bit at the end but doesn't overstay its welcome.
I was totally about having a Turkish woman with trauma in her past at the focus of a noire-type film right up until they decided it made sense for her to completely forget about all the racism hurled her way by the cop and fall in love with him because......... he let her stay at his place when she had literally no one else to turn to and he cleans up his ill father's shit????? That's??? it??????????
I get the noire tropey vibe that it was going for but I don't care! He was a complete prick to her and that was never addressed nor even APOLOGIZED FOR??? No thanks!
