I can't believe Yoona actually portrayed myself in a movie so accurately wow.
Anyways, Confidential Assignment probably has the biggest heart out of all the buddy-cop action comedies I have ever seen. The most annoying thing about it was the upbeat music that randomly plays out of nowhere whenever a fight scene ensues, it was quite jarring. But overall fun, I had a few good laughs out of this.
A Korean buddy-cop action comedy that doesn’t veer too far off from the formula. A mismatched duo; one a suave, handsome & serious straight-man, the other a bumbling comic-relief, with clashing personalities who have to set aside their differences to work together? You’ve seen variations of these.
This tried to subvert the formula a bit, by pairing a North Korean detective with a South Korean one, manifesting the tempestuous relationship between both countries in their dynamic.
It’s a neat twist, one that falls short unfortunately bcoz of its two uninteresting leads. Hyun Bin, as the suave NK cop, is too boring & wooden as a lead, lacking any palpable charisma whatsoever, & his SK partner - played by Yoo Hae-Jin - is unfunny…
Standard buddy-cop fanfare from South Korea. Nice moments of comic relief, score is distracting, but movie as a whole is quite charming. I would have loved more depth on the North Korea/South Korea dichotomy, but I shouldn't be looking for that in what is essentially the equivalent of a Hollywood action flick.
Imagine if they remade Red Heat with North and South Korea. Fun stuff and the action is really tight. Wish there was more of it tho.
This was a very nice surprise. Definitely the kind of buddy action comedy you want to stumble upon on a Sunday afternoon. The action is far better than I expected and a guitar-heavy rock score keeps up the momentum. There’s also a number of wonderful and sometimes absurd character moments - as is to be expected by a South Korean film that fulfils the mandatory running time quota, but it all comes together quite wonderfully.
in which north korean supersoldier beats up a group of goons using toiletpaper and a papercup
fantastic buddy cop chemistry. i love me some reunification
A North Korean detective is sent to Seoul and partnered with a South Korean detective to find a criminal defector. It plays like an '80's action film (even the synth score gives this vibe).
North and South buddy cop action at its best. Doesnt do anything particularly new or surprising but everything it does do, it does well. Hyun Bin and Yu Hae-jin (that man is a treasure) have good chemistry, its pacey, balances the laughs with the drama evenly and the action is very well done with plenty of chases, gunplay and hand to hand etc. Despite its length it feels breezy and doesn't veer into heavy handed messages or melodrama. Top notch.
Hyun Bin and Yoo Hae-jin make a nice pair, Yoo is fun, Hyun handles the action well, even though the film doesn't get too much out of his character. It's produced well, soundtrack is super generic though, trying to make you go "fuck yeah" even though the moments don't quite earn it, all of this is fine but...
The writing.... tough cop is motivated by the death of his wife and fun cop gets his family kidnapped at the end... those are tropes tired enough individually but putting them both in the same film is sooooo tired I had to take a little nap to recover from it and it really made me lose interest.
Really surprised in seeing that this was from the director of the far far superior A Hard Day, so yeah watch that instead or if you dig the North/South team-up I guess I'd go with Secret Reunion.
Still holds up as a fun buddy comedy. Could probably still lose half an hour but that from the far below average action (for a buddy comedy) and not from the even better character moments.
fun wholesome buddy cop film
makes the north koreans look like total badasses and the south koreans look soft and debauched
a few missteps but worth watching on the whole
Buddy cop flick with several good laughs. Recommended for people that:
1. haven't seen "Lethal Weapon" enough
2. are okay with kung/gun fu (little blood seen)
3. don't mind reading their movies.
The movie is entertaining from start two finish. Hyun Bin as a NK detective is badass and he steals the show. Add the score it’s just perfectly suits the movie and action is top notch. If you are into action movies give this one a shot and trust me you won’t be disappointed.
watched this for yoona's few scenes but it turned out alright. doesn't have that much of a plot but the actions were okay. it didn't bore me. maybe hyunbin did well on this one.
so this is probably the last movie I'm watching in my cloy hangover phase of watching only movies with son ye jin and hyun bin the leads are charming good plotline I really enjoyed this one
every time I see a Korean movie like this, I can't help but think about how generic it would've been if anyone in the west had made it, I'm pretty sure that the characters wouldn't have been fun as they are in this, Yoo Hae-jin's family wouldn't have been as goofy and well developed, the action would've probably been less fun too because of the way the characters would've been written, etc ; sure, the villain and his motivation weren't groundbreaking but he worked because everything around him was good enough
I'm really enjoying how moviemakers in the South are basically solving the decades long war against the North by themselves through lighthearted buddy cop movies

Hyun Bin and action films ugh. i like how the two show super distinct personalities yet the way they work together in the end to catch the bad guy. the two characters had this chemistry that worked well for both action and the hint of humor. Yoona in this film is a mood like to see someone like Hyun Bin my gosh HAHAHAHAHA #relate the way she dressed up and acted all girly and all. yes probably me if it's someone like Hyun Bin.
i hear there's a sequel coming soon and I can't wait to see what kind of story happens with Confidential Assignment 2

It's not bad in any regards. There's humor, there are the typical lit action scenes, the chemistry between two lead actors.
However, ultimately I've seen too many good Korean cop movies that far surpass this one. There's this slight lack of originality that didn't really make this special for me as well as less development in the main characters. Chul-ryung is more or less defined in his simple motive, yet I think Jin-tae could've used more consistency that's just more than 'good cop'. There were things that just didn't fit neatly into the narrative in terms of his strengths and despite everything I don't think we truly connected with him. Both have parallels in family but I think it could've…
