  people were understandably excited when this was announced as cronenberg's return to "body horror" but i don't think that's actually a useful way to think about this film. while saul tenser insists that he uncomfortable with the ways in which his body is mutating and evolving (so much so, in fact, that he's willing to work with the police to subvert groups who relish that mutation). but the gentle (and profoundly feminine) pleasure of his gestures during his first performance betray an obvious thrill at the experiences his new organs provide. surgery is the new sex, after all, and he's not very good at the…

  Finding organ-ization in chaos, meaning in mutilation and artistic expression in the dying days/dilapidated ruins of mankind.   Watching David Cronenberg’s beguiling new dream-noir — a twilight vision of tomorrow in which the next phase of human evolution is considered, at least by some privately self-conflicted bureaucrats, as a punishable insurrection against the very nature of humanity itself — I couldn’t help but think about the current plague of extremist politicians who are using their static interpretation of a 235-year-old document as justification to dictate what happens inside living people.

  as a Certified Cronenbabe, it’s gratifying to see the definitive king of body horror return to his old-school roots. reminded me of an amalgamation of eXistenZ, Dead Ringers, and his novel Consumed, which are my favorite works of his, so i was an automatic sucker for this. fantastic speculative world-building exercise, and even if the plethora of themes/ideas didn't fully coalesce in the end, its imagery and effects were so grotesquely unique that i have to admire it.

  this one is for the fellow sickos who had an erotic awakening while watching the oscar isaac vivisection scene in Annihilation. surgery IS the new sex! 🫀

  In his intro before the screening, David Cronenberg told the audience that we would "get it" within the first 10 minutes and that we were free to leave after that, but if we wanted to stay he'd be back for Q&A. At the Q&A, he said that there's no point explaining the movie because there's nothing to explain. We can assume he was being facetious (I've read Cronenberg on Cronenberg, I know he can talk when he wants to), but there's something in what he said that conveys the spirit of this enterprise, which is a place for Cronenberg to linger in the sorts of images and ideas that get him buzzing, and fuck you if you don't like it.
