You are so handsome. Anyone ever tell you that?
Yeah, I get it all the time. Brad Pitt’s got nothing on me.
Whenever I hear the phrase, adapted from an improvisational workshop I tend to get scared.
With Blue Iguana the fear is real. There’s way too many “scenes” in which actors bounce monologues off each other in a very stagey way. The stories are unoriginal and have been told many times before.
However, there’s also a few moments that work. Sandra Oh stands out as the most real and complex character and Daryl Hannah is amusing as the naive and spaced out Angel. The two of them creating a to-do list for Angel’s apartment is the best scene in…
Film #3 of the Todd Gaines Movie Challenge
Item #4 - A film about a stripper
More like Boring at the Blue Iguana. They jam packed this with damn near every stripper cliche possible. I dug the improvisational style but it didn't work out in the end. I'll stick with ridiculous Showgirls as my stripper flick of choice.
Its carried mostly by its cast who all do a good job creating their own characters in this improv film. Watching the documentary Strip Notes that accompanies this film gives you a better understanding of where the actress took their inspiration from. Its a good companion piece.
The Blue Iguana strip club is the setting for this unique movie. Mostly improvised, this focuses on the different women who work as strippers at the club. All there for different reasons with different aspirations but all with one thing in common.
I quite enjoyed this movie. It was cast very well with great performances by Darryl Hannah, Jennifer Tilly and even Sandra Oh.
Great movie.
Good and serious movie about the life of a group of strippers at a Los Angeles club. The film shows them completely unglamourized, so don't expect too much eroticism in this picture. The focus is really on the problems and personalities of each one, on the "real" person that exists behind each stripper. Highlight for Sandra Oh, who plays the poet stripper Jasmine.
This movie has some good ideas but they go nowhere. At two hours it is far too long and has too many characters to get you caring about any one of them in particular
everybody said that movie was shit and while theres no plot and no structure theres sandra oh sooo
A total mess of a film. Tells a few different stories without getting anywhere. You can't really say what is going on, who is who or what the film is about. "Dancing At The Blue Iguana" follows the lives of a few strippers. There's also a hitman watching the girls... and the club. But he keeps watching, never really does anything besides that. The director makes bad use of handheld camerawork, constantly panning right and left for no reason. On a positive side, Sandra Oh, Jennifer Tilly and Darryl Hannah have a few interesting moments of improvisation and the neon photography is beautiful to look at. Abel Ferrara or Gaspar Noe would have made a great film out of this material, actually this one reminded me of Ferrara's "Go-Go Tales".
Lots of beautiful women naked gives the movie a unique feel, but their intertwining stories are just not interesting enough. If they were as well-developed as Traffic or Magnolia, we'd really have something here.
Moderately interesting performances by Hannah and Oh.
this is one of those films that you know is bad, but you can’t help but watch either
at first i thought I knew this club.... okay so the script is trite, def does hooker with a heart of gold trope like oh my god she’s SMART she can READ ...
sandra oh kills this as she does with everything she is in. she gave the most natural performance, i believed her character. i usually can’t stand daryl hannah but her character was kinda cute. jennifer tilly tho- sooo overacted girl this isn’t showgirls.
interesting that both this and exotica feature prominent ‘stripping to leonard cohen scenes’
also, the floor work was pretty good, i think some stripping movies have them moving wayyyy too fast.
so in summary - sandra oh is a star, but why did everyone’s story have to be such a tragedy?
everybody said that movie was shit and while theres no plot and no structure theres sandra oh sooo
I liked this movie, but it’s definitely not a *good* movie. probably because it was produced & directed by men, it had every stripper cliche. one of those ~no plot, just vibes~ movies, but the vibes are sad. that being said, I did like the (female) characters and the focus on their stories. of course Sandra Oh, Jennifer Tilly, Kristin Bauer van Straten, and Daryl Hannah were amazing. if this movie was produced and directed by women, and actual sex workers at that, it would have been really good.
