So there it is, my final Malick. This was the only one I hadn't seen and it is my favourite. By far.
After seeing the Tree of Life I was sure that nothing could surpass that experience and I'm still sure of that as it is such a unique film. But Days of Heaven's narrative driven structure and awe inspiring dedication (and perhaps a lot less megalomania) make it a film that appeals to all senses, sensitivities and even the smallest iota of passion you might have within yourself for the medium.
This dedication shows perhaps most in Malick's decision to shoot practically everything during the Golden Hour.…

As much as I want to love Days of Heaven more (and don't get me wrong, it is arguably the most visually breathtaking film in Malick's catalogue), I can't help but feel the choppiness played out behind the scenes - literal years of editing and postproduction - manifest itself in the pacing. There's an odd mix of in media res sequences coupled with the now-traditional meditative abstract breaks that effectively cause a jerkiness and stuttering in the narrative progression. It doesn't destroy the film by any means, but it adds to my feeling that there is an extraordinary story hidden here, fragmented, glimpsed, but never appropriately focused on due to whatever issues caused such a headache in the editing booth.…
The Director of Photography, Néstor Almendros, was going blind during production. Before each shot, he would have his assistant take a picture with a Polaroid camera and then would view it under a high-powered magnifying glass.

Terrence Malick's central cinematic concern is the search for pure nature outside society, for humanity without it's inhumanity; but this is a search that he believes will always ultimately fail. There is no pure nature outside of humanity's corrupting influence. He developed this conflict through his study of Heideggar, whose idea that there is "no cosmic power, only action of hands upon the world" would profoundly influence his thinking. A tale of locusts and fire, encased in paradise. Terrence Malick's utopia is found and lost; a fractured love triangle shown through wheat fields and the sweat of labor. Nature is pronounced, biblical, and grandiose. It's as if every bird and bug acknowledges the glances and acts of violence and interprets them as universal deeds, carried through time so that God's primordial wrath may be recognized. While Malick's Badlands envisions Eden as place of restriction for Kit and Holly, Days of Heaven sends Bill, Abby, and Linda to an idyll realm drenched in orange and yellow hues and rich with opportunity.
