Charles Laughton succeeds in driving away Cary Grant, but he can't drive away Gary Cooper. So, he proceeds to having a total meltdown on board a sub, because he acquiesces he isn't as hot as Gary Cooper. Which while not the best of places to fall apart is also totally fair, because take a look at Gary Cooper.
As long as you don't have to listen to Gary Cooper, because that would be an utter mistake in this film. Somehow he sounds like an alien masquerading as a human being. I don't understand how he is so monotonous and stilted here, next to Tallulah Bankhead. Maybe he was nervous around her, because she literally said she took the role so she could fuck him? Maybe that's why? Their chemistry is poorer than I anticipated. Didn't think I'd say this, but bring Cary Grant back.
Oh, and I liked Tallulah Bankhead here.
