On the planet Ygam, the Draags, extremely technologically and spiritually advanced blue humanoids, consider the tiny Oms, human beings descendants of Terra's inhabitants, as ignorant animals. This movie inexplicably gave me a lot of anxiety...
I don’t necessarily fault the film for that, some films are meant to give you anxiety (see: Uncut Gems) but I’m not really sure why for this one.
It’s definitely a trip! The animation is quite inventive and freaky.
As you’re looking at the blue people’s world you see them as the enemy, but as you see the little people world you realize that much of it is about how all power corrupts and knowledge frees. That being said, much of the imagery exists for its own sake and it’s quite beautiful to see the world these animators have created.
Sometimes stressful but entirely unique, it’s amazing that this was even made.
Perhaps one of the most unique films I’ve ever seen. The score combined with the art animation makes for one hell of an experience.
Fantastic Planet is an imaginative, artistic, and most of all, bone-chilling cult classic. Depicting in alarming detail a highly advanced blue giant alien race, and its brutal subjugation of the human-like creatures, Fantastic Planet creates a bizarre and uncomfortable universe, where human race is no longer the dominant one, with many gruesome scenes depicting almost genocide like scenarios. One scene that sticks out shows the blue aliens killing the tiny humans with poison gas, which unfortunately brings to mind the infamous gas chambers employed by the nazis. Fantastic Planet is also marvelous for its vivid portrait of a planet overrun by assorted macabre creatures that are equal parts intimidating and morbidly hilarious with their nightmarish features.

The trippiest film I’ve ever seen bar none, and I’ve seen Paprika. Put it this way, recently I quit smoking weed, by the time this finished I actually felt as if I’d started up again, and even that understates it. Fantastic Planet transcends the effects of any cannabis strain, delivering nothing but pure hallucinogenic ecstasy from frame one to its final explosion of shapes and colour. You have to hand it to the animators, even studios as renowned as Ghibli don't often match the boundlessly abstract ingenuity this offers, a meticulously illustrated carnival of anatomically perplexing organisms throwing us into a psychedelic world we can’t help but welcome.
