2022 ‘गंगूबाई काठियावाड़ी’ Directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali
Duped and sold to a brothel, a young woman fearlessly reclaims her power, using underworld connections to preside over the world she was once a pawn in.
The film bravely tries to make a prostitute into a commercial masala "hero". However, in its attempt at doing that, the film focuses too much on exterior facets and not enough on Gangu’s interior and who she was as a person. The film chooses to not explore the emotional and mental trauma of living in such a place, and thus reducing the impact of when Gangubai fights for their human rights. That said, the film is effective enough to make us want to cheer for Gangubai!
This is an incredibly difficult character to pull of and despite Alia’s visible efforts, she’s not always entirely convincing. I did absolutely love Seema Pahwa and Jim Sarbh in this.
I am really torn on this one, on one hand I totally despise the fact that Mr Sanjay Leela Bhansali thinks that a movie referencing an issue is the same as it being about that issue or exploring the issue, because he explores the themes of this film in a very watered-down and sanitized way to make them digestible for the people, but on the other hand I absolutely cannot deny the fact the film was pretty impressive in many other aspects.
I guess it's my inherent disdain for SLB's works in general which is stopping me from loving this film, for making a film like Gangubai Kathiawadi impactful, the director needs to have a more humanistic approach towards the…
no amount of good filmmaking and good acting will change the fact that this film spends nearly three hours trying to convince you that Gangubai was an amazing feminist icon that helped women and children, but the hidden and ignored truth is that Gangubai, in reality, was an awful person that took part in human trafficking, murders, drug warfare. If you can look at this film as an entirely fictitious story then good for you but i just couldn't see it that way
Not a single nudity or sex scene in a movie full of prostitutes.
That's when you know it's a fucking great movie....
Or, the Girlboss of Kamathipura. No, this didn't work at all for me and I think it has a lot to do with the lead performance. However, let me just praise Alia's dedication and hard work first. There is simply no one in her generation who has better dialogue delivery and her vocal work here is just astounding. I wish other actors in BW were invested in their characters and movies as she always is. I love when an actor shows so mych care toward their craft. So, yes, this is one thing that's inarguably great about her performance here. And still, I didn't believe her much as Gangubai.
I have long believed that SLB's obsession with yesteryear actresses is…
oh..a bhansali film that didn't bore the fuck out of me?!? alia bhatt should give many mainstream actors of current generation bollywood (and that includes male actors too.) a lesson on voice-modulation because that skill of hers carried the whole film imo. for a change it was nice to see a masala-ish Or say heroic treatment (to some extent) given to a female character in a bollywood movie, but what's with the casting of a cis-het man as a trans-woman, borderline villainisation of a trans character, pathan worship and quite a messed up take on sex-work in the name of surface level feminism? Women are heroes, all of them. Not just scorned women. Perhaps this is how men see heroes…
Jab Saiyaan and Meri Jaan was some magic. Bhansali needs to make a true-blue musical.
