Andrew returns to his hometown for the funeral of his mother, a journey that reconnects him with past friends. The trip coincides with his decision to stop taking his powerful antidepressants. Take every bad review that you have ever read about a Wes Anderson film and apply it to this movie. This is quirk for quirks sake.
A lot has been said about the great soundtrack. I agree, the music on the soundtrack is fantastic. I also feel the same thing about the soundtrack from the film DAZED AND CONFUSED. And I also feel that both soundtracks are obvious and overwhelming.
This movie drowns in its mise-en-scène. It has a specific look and feel, but it is all surface level. It never enhanced any action or character for me.
The script is far too indie-precious, and Natalie Portman is the quintessential M.P.D.G.

there's a part in this movie where a lady says she takes too long to eat her lucky charms so she just ends up with a bowl of pink milk. lucky charms milk doesn't turn pink, it turns green. this is bad writing. when they tell you to write from experience, this is the kind of thing they're really talking about.

I don’t think Garden State is even close to a masterpiece, but it’s definitely a good movie. You’ll either hate it’s weirdness or just let it roll over you.
Great soundtrack and I’m in love with Natalie Portman. In the end, I was charmed by its kooky heart and found things to like but I doubt it’ll make a memorable impact on me.

The dialogue in this doe...it’s horrible. Watch zbraff be sad and have Natalie Portman fall in love with him because she has nothing going on in her life besides burying her pet hamster.
