  Happy End (or more appropriately, bnƎ γqqɒH) is a technical marvel. opens up with a talking decapitated head that sticks back to the neck it's separated from, it is only the first of its streak of oddly hysterical stunts. shortly, people, cows, horses, and ducks walking backwards appear on the screen. a few backmasked dialogues interleave the narration; car exhaust pipes inhale their smoke; faucets siphon water from the tub; pastries unchewed leave the mouths, returned to plates. and in this remarkable display of time's reversal, the rampage of jealousy, the disastrous marriage dissipate within the receding years, the decreasing age; an anti-clockwise existence. so death gives birth; birth succumbs to death. but what makes this slightly-over-60-minute film is its…

  What was in the Czechoslovakian water supply in the 60's? These guys were experimenting so ferociously in the arena of film, the sheer variety and virtuosity of this stuff continues to boggle my mind.

  Happy End is a film that runs literally in reverse. And I mean, a significant quantity of this film is run backwards, but with the dialogue spoken forwards but with that dialogue reflecting a backwards order.

  Jesus, this is hard to explain. What I mean is, the dialogue isn't run backwards because that would sound like gobbledigook. Although the lines are spoken normally, the interchange is in backwards order. Also, we get a voice-over narrative from our protagonist, who seems to be making sense of events…

  Another shockingly underseen and unknown film from the '60s. Happy End takes the depressing story of a murderer who gets executed via guillotine and puts an ironic spin on it by showing his entire life story in reverse. So, a man whose life gradually gets worse and worse is mirrored into someone whose life gets better and better. The dialogues and situations are cleverly written and absolutely hilarious, and overall the technical skills required to pull something like this off are on a very high level.

  Ainsi, il est possible de faire un film qui se déroule totalement à l'envers, avec des personnages qui marchent à l'envers, mangent à l'envers... et d'en faire faire quelque chose d'aussi drôle que brillant (ces dialogues qui se répondent dans l'autre sens). La prouesse du film réside dans le fait que le gimmick ne s'essouffle pas, ne lasse pas, et on accepte sa structure, grâce aussi à ce qu'il raconte et comment il le fait. Moins show-off que Nolan ou Noé qui n'ont décidément rien inventé.

  A completely inverse and clever narrative that tells two different stories by using the same images, both of which are in conflict with each other. A bold, deconstructive and extremely funny film.
  An inverted world with strange and unconventional laws that are cleverly comes out from this real world.

  If Nolan reversed the sequences of film with "Memento" in 2000, Lipsky did the same in 1967 with the "happy ending" by reversing it frame by frame.

  Oldřich Lipský deserves praise for the ambition alone. To make a short based on this gimmick would be an interesting experiment, but to make a 70 minute film out of this and still make it entertaining is truly the work of a madman. Even after decades of innovation to the medium Happy End still transcends the newer films that use backwards chronology like Irreversible and Memento. Where those use the style as a more simplistic method of playing with how we perceive time and events, Happy End takes it several steps further and creates an alternate reality. A world with surface-level gags where people only walk backwards, but also more interesting concepts like weddings being used as a celebration of divorce and virginity.…
