how can you film climate change? an unobtrusive documentary in literally breathtaking and jaw-dropping images.
more than that: a view into a proper hermits life, and first and foremost magical realism with capital M - the surreal and beautiful break into reality by the walruses is first bizarre, then funny and finally completely heartbreaking and devastating.
When it comes to its technical aspects, this film is outstanding. The sound mixing is engrossing. The cinematography in the film are so stunning that they may make you gasp. And you could say that it gets the point across. Unfortunately, other than that, the short was rather dull to me.

Is this really a documentary? It feels like improv reality. The filmmakers seem very intrusive, setting shots that would have interrupted the flow of the guy’s daily routine. Shouldn’t the end crawl with the actual message of the film been incorporated into the guy’s narrative? Didn’t he want to be interviewed?
I’m asking all these questions because the story of a guy who watches the decline of the the walrus population in Siberia because of global warming is very important and intriguing. But we don’t learn much past the synopsis I just gave you.
Beautiful cinematography.
Visceral. Visceral is the only word that comes to mind when watching this chilling short that reminds us of just how much damage we’ve done to our home. Our and their only home. Heartbreaking.
If a movie is ever going to change someone's mind that global warming exists, I would say this is the best chance. You see thousands of walruses line the beach without commentary. Then you see some bodies left behind, including an orphaned calf. And only after taking all of it in do you find out that because of the unnatural melting of ice flow walruses have to take to the land, causing stampedes and deaths.
Sometimes it's the minute details that pull a monumental problem into focus.
This is incredible. It's a 20 minute docu-hybrid environmental film. It feels like the result of Greenpeace hiring Andrei Tarkovsky. There are a few upsetting scenes but it needs to be seen. Extraordinary.
You can watch it here:
My quota for animal deaths seen in the year 2023 reached with one short film.
I had no idea what this was about.
Then all of a sudden it was an ARACHNOPHOBIA level swarm of whole body writhing walruses covering every inch of the beach.
Amazing visuals, albeit sadly the product of climate change.
After this was ended, I couldn't stop thinking about a horror mash-up of TUSK x 100000 meets THE LIGHTHOUSE.
