Sandler's shtick of IQ-deficient buffoon that saves the day may have become tired over the years, but it makes sense why he returns to this old character type year after year.
You can basically divide all of adam sandler's comedic movies into two categories:
One where he plays an under-achieving, but well-meaning buffoon:
Waterboy, Billy Madison, Happy Gilmore, Big Daddy, etc.
And the One where he plays basically himself, a cranky middle aged jewish man with a bit of a chip on his shoulder:
Click, Grown Ups, Murder Mystery, Blended, etc.
When he plays himself, a callousness gets added to his roles that makes sandler a decent amount unlikeable. He is gruff. And uncaring. He is only out for himself.
His town idiots, on the other hand, are the exact opposite. They are benevolent, always caring for others, humble.
Hubie Halloween may not be great, but its sandler at his most earnest. That was enough for me.
