Macon Blair's directorial debut feels like it's ripped straight outta the Jeremy Saulnier Cinematic Universe or JSCU for short. The Oregon setting. The familiar music. The tight dialogue. Plus, the familiar sudden violence. No doubt, Mr Blair learned a lot, working with Mr Saulnier.
I know opinions of this work of film are all over the place, but this flick is right in my wheelhouse. I think if you're more Blue Ruin than Green Room, you might feel the same way I do.
I love the dark humor. Honestly, I'm not sure how many will figure out where the narrative is going. For how the film starts, I didn't expect it to end the way it did.
Both Melanie Lynskey…
What the fuck is wrong with people?
That question, which feels more pressing by the day, is at the ruefully dark heart of Macon Blair’s “I don’t feel at home in this world anymore.” a hysterical and hyper-violent morality play for our fucked-up times. “Everyone is an asshole!” screams Ruth (the spectacular Melanie Lynskey), and she makes a pretty good point. A voice on the radio barks reports of another mass shooting. A truck in front of her pumps jet black exhaust straight into the air. Some jerk cuts her line at the grocery store. It’s like the rest of society held a secret meeting where they decided to spend the rest of their lives shitting on anyone who wasn’t…
reasons i identify with melanie lynskey's character:
-depressed
-done with humanity
-loves her laptop more than anything
-says goodbye to dogs she just met
Funny, simplistic, great escalation of a normal occurrence. A little put off by the ending, but I greatly enjoyed it.
never thought elijah wood with a rat tail would make me feel things yet here i am ready 2 risk it all
You could do a lot worse than this baby BLUE RUIN, and I'd totally sit through as much "Melanie Lynskey and Rat-tailed Elijah Wood: Amateur Detectives" as you care to shove at me.
