TIFF 2018 Film #19
It didn’t take long for memories and images of the only other Strickland film I’ve seen, Berberian Sound Studios to come flooding back. His films seem like a nightmarish marriage of Lynch, Guy Madden, and Monty Python, and In Fabric has it going on from the first frame. While I’ve never been to a Midnight Madness screening at TIFF, from the opening credits, you know fully well why that programme was created … a zoo for wonderfully bonkers films like this.
From the seventies-tastic ads for a ‘trusted’ department store staffed by axiom spouting Elviras, to the mid level bank executives that are forever wishing for ‘a word’ In Fabric is positively laced with the weird and the wonderful. Yes, it also gets to be genuinely creepy, particularly when it goes down the path of fetishistic eroticisim.
My gem of the fest.
