I'm struggling to write anything even remotely sensible about this film. It is there. It exists. It is neither good nor bad. It's an entertaining piece of ........eh.......entertainment. And that's about it.
So with all the serious critique out of the way, I'll leave you with this:

Tom. Dude. Stop compensating for your length, ok? It's ruining your films.
In order to buy a construction company in Pittsburgh, you gotta dome a bunch of people with a sniper rifle to cover up overcharging the city a few thousand dollars for another bridge. Pittsburgh just loves bridges! However, you may incur the wrath of the military police's smollest, toughest bean: Jack Reacher.
Werner Herzog is in like 3 scenes, but the film would be significantly diminished without him.
The character Jack Reacher describes himself in the film as a "drifter with nothing to lose". That is the kind of movie that Jack Reacher is. It is simple, has no time for fluff, and that is why I dig it so much.
This is a straight up detective story that features all the cliches in the book, but everyone involved in making the film is completely aware of that. This is the kind of movie that Charles Bronson or Steve McQueen would have been cast in during the 80s. Being a big follower of Lee Child’s Jack Reacher novels and having read all of them, was so excited towards this action mystery thriller adaptation. Initially was surprised with the casting of Tom Cruise, had doubts if he can convincingly pull off the hard faced badass role. Though Tom doesn’t match the physical attributes of the one in novel, he certainly does pull off the mysterious personality with brains n brawn, with just the right conviction n swag. The conspiracy, suspense, pacing, tone and the brutal action/ chase sequences give you enough solid elements to keep you engaged. For regular viewers, it’s a good watch. But for the ones who have travelled with the fictional lead character through for years, it is one highly entertaining and enjoyable treat.
old-school 1940s pulp made with the tightest visual and narrative economy you'll ever see in a 2010s hollywood production. cruise was born to be mcquarrie's muse, his mammoth charisma funneled into a blunt proficiency that anchors the frame like a brick house. as much as i dearly love their mission: impossible partnership, there's a lot to be said for jack reacher's no-nonsense plotting and coherence. something with the large canvas of mission can't be this lean or tight by definition; one hopes cruise & mcquarrie will return to making a handful more of these in the decade to come.
after seeing this five times over, i'm really convinced that it's one of the best-directed films of the last decade; mcquarrie's like the reincarnation of don siegel, he never says something in the story before he first shows you it, shows you the how, then tells you the why. there's not a bad sequence here, everything's tight, vigorous; i've checked out a jack reacher book & it was written at an 8th grade reading level, nothing of note, but this? this is no-frills entertainment at its purest; the car chase here is one of the top 5 car chases ever, maybe top 3. it just rips!
Well this is still absolutely terrific fun to the point where I'm wondering why it's taken them so long to decide to do a sequel.
But the important thing is that they ARE doing a sequel and you're all going to go out and see it and Tom is going to keep making Mission Impossible and Jack Reacher films until he can no longer run. Which will never happen because Tom doesn't age. So don't let me down here. Make Jack Reacher 2 a big hit. You know it makes sense.

From time to time comes a movie which I entirely miss and don’t realize of its existence til the sequel comes. A primary example of this has to be this movie, a film that seems a blast of a time as the lately great duo comprised of Christopher McQuarrie and Tom Cruise, who has delivered us some great movies like the last two Mission Impossible.
A few minutes into the movie and I am already digging the score.
