Michael Sheen has given one great performance after another over the years, but I was still uncertain he could pull off portraying Kenneth Williams, the hilarious but complicated star of so many Carry On movies. Happy to report that Sheen is simply phenomenal. The voice(s), the mannerisms, the longing for acceptance mixed with the need to be left alone...he nailed it. Sheen truly honors Williams with how well he captures him.
This was a BBC TV movie, and it feels sort of boxed-in or stagey at times, but it's based mainly on Williams' own diaries so it focuses on the more up close and personal moments.
