  If you ever wondered what a Joe Dante-directed live-action/animated Looney-Tunes extravaganza based around an oblivious studio system and corrupt big business was like, look no further. From gag to gag, set piece to set piece, Back in Action is utterly bonkers in its logic free plotting and the constant manipulation of busy frames. It doesn't give a fuck where it goes or what it wants to say. It's just happy to exist and be itself. The Lego Movie owes a lot more to it than you'd think. A particular sequence flying through the Louvre is sublime, sublime, sublime; showcasing Warner Bros icons melding in and out of surfaces and paintings. A cartoon expanded to the cinema screen with audacity and grace. I truly miss Brendan Fraser and I'm pretty sure Steve Martin used all his silliness for this one performance. Take off your nostalgia goggles, this is so much better than Space Jam.

  Hugely enjoyable. The scene at the Louvre is the first and only genuinely masterpiece-level Looney Tunes scene since Termite Terrace disbanded in the '60s. I'm even warming up to Steve Martin's performance a tiny bit. Joe Dante always says that making this movie was a hellish experience and that the final product is severely compromised, but he should be proud that he got the Man from Planet X (title character from the 1951 Edgar G. Ulmer-directed film) into a megabudget major-studio release in the year 2003. By the way, I saw this twice theatrically, so you can't blame me for Space Jam: A New Legacy.

  Plot twist: This is actually completely ahead of its time and actually one of the best animated films of the 2000's.

  And also Brendan Fraser is a surprisingly charming comedic lead.

  But I will say what everyone is thinking, Robin Williams should have played Steve Martin's character.

  On a technical level, this is way beyond the combination of animation and live-action in Who Framed Roger Rabbit. Which goes to show you: It’s not enough to be way beyond other movies on a technical level. Roger Rabbit is also a good mystery and features several characters you really care about; Back in Action is a generic chase movie with no interesting characters, including the Looney Tunes. (Still, there are a few standout sequences; the scene in the Louvre, with Bugs, Daffy, and Elmer jumping into different famous paintings and transforming into each art style, gets close to the vibe of a great Chuck Jones short.)
