So, a couple nights ago a finished watching my way through all seven seasons of MacGyver (it jumped the shark about halfway through season five though). So, why not watch the two TV movies now? Sounds like a perfectly good plan.
This one does get back to the more action/adventure type stuff from the early seasons of the MacGyver, instead of the many misguided attempts at message episodes in the later seasons (oh look, MacGyver solved racism again). The thing is, this felt more like a bad Indiana Jones rip off than it did a MacGyver episode.
There are so many little plot holes and places where they get the science wrong that it gets annoying. I mean, you can't…
MacGyver with that glorious mullet and having a solution in the most dangerous of situations is TVs definite Secret Agent, this made for TV film that follows the show is a decent continuation to the show and is quite fun, but at the same like the show is not meant to be taken seriously. The story is entertaining and interesting and it relies on a good pace and solid thrills that are the trademark of the classic show. A fun made for TV film that if you enjoyed the show, you’re sure going to like the film. I enjoyed the show very much so, and enjoyed the fact that MacGyver was a jack of all trade able to make stuff…
This felt like Young Indiana Jones but less engaging. I love Brian Blessed, but this is a MacGyver special here, buddy, not a Brian Blessed special. MacGyver honestly feels like a side character in his own film.
Also, the plot was complete nonsense. None of the scientific jargon lined up and the whole discovery was absurd in a not-fun way.
But the biggest offense here, and I take this very seriously: why wasn't MacGyver making shit out of random objects? He does it once or twice here and attention isn't really drawn to it. But like, that's MacGyver's thing. He makes cool devices and problem-solving equipment out of random crap he has lying around. If he doesn't even do that,…
With some barrowed props from Tales of the Gold Monkey, and Magnum P.I., this 'Indiana Jones' inspired extended Macgyver Episode predates "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" but look for the stuff that that later film actually stole from this "TV Movie." You'll be amazed. I have to admit, this is much better than Kingdom of the Crystal Skulls, even if it does have cardboard sets and some cheesy squib effects. Long Live Macgyver!
The first MacGyver TV movie is already a pretty lame attempt at resurrecting the franchise. RDA is tired, the franchise is tired, the crew working on the movie are tired. Very few proper macgyverisms and not much else to remember.
I love macgyver. Just finished the last episode and jumped into this tv movie. So funny. So good. Haha
Classic MacGyverisms mixed with Indiana Jones and a poor mans Bruce McGill Playing a similar character. Fun enough.
While the main plot is basically a rehash of The Legend of the Holy Rose two parter, replete with the London local and ancient technology, the rest of the film more than makes up for its retreading of well worn territory. Frankly THIS is the film MacGyver should have ended on: an over the top celebration of the most absurd aspects of the series. The cast looks like they are having so much fun, Richard Dean Anderson is on point and Brian Blessed hams it up to great effect as the professor. Treasure of Atlantis culminates in what can only be described as a surreal set piece involving a lost temple hidden in an active volcano. Ultimately, ToA is the kind of dumb fun that makes shows like MacGyver succeed and certainly the right note to end the series on.

I mean, it's terrible - but it's also one of those movies that's real fun to make fun of as long as you go in with the right mindset.
And that mullet is oh so glorious!
