After Manchester by the Sea, Kenneth Lonergan's third feature film, the world stopped spinning. Of course, such an inherently hyperbolic statement comes from a place of personal connection, the typical gushing praise of having just encountered an "experience", but truly, its root is in the world which was painted before me. It seemed no different initially: seagulls swooping through the harsh winter winds, snow cascading onto the salted pavement, operatic groups of tenors and baritones providing an extraordinary backdrop for the ordinary. Continuing my streak of personal essays, I have found another film that so deeply affects and touches me that I can't not talk about it. I left the theater in my mother's arms, barely able to walk and not finding the strength to say what was wrong. I wasn't even sure what was wrong. this splintered drama isn't as unkempt or operatic as MARGARET, but even a comparatively streamlined Lonergan film hems with the messiness of real life. Casey Affleck's emotional journey is a matter of millimeters and micro-adjustments... there's no BIG SCENE, no swinging for the fences, just an irreparably broken man trying to restore a small piece of himself. it's a movie that understands how, with the right characters, the story of a man trying to get out of bed in the morning can be a genuine epic.
everyone here is as good as you've heard (the Boston-ness can feel a bit much, and Casey Affleck would agree with me, but there's no denying it's authentic).
also, rocks the best line of Sundance '16. won't spoil, but it comes when the *holy shit great* Lucas Hedges can't.
