first 6 episodes: this is pretty good i guess
finale, approx. 30 minutes in: when did i start crying
This is one of those shows that hit you with that "what do I do now?" feeling when it's all over. But seriously...this was the one thing I looked forward to every week. What do I do now?
I'm a sucker for "troubled detective has personal ties to small town-with-murky-secrets" trope, and this show does it so well and nothing feels stale. It manages to be both a finely crafted piece of whodunit entertainment and also an emotionally resonant character drama. You're effectively hooked, thanks to twists & turns and an intriguing ensemble of characters. And the finale was full of pathos & emotional catharsis. Kate Winslet's performance is just a thing of beauty all the way around, there's enough depth and nuances in her performance alone to buoy the 7-episodes run.
How much sorrow can one person carry? Quite breathtaking. So unfair. Kate bloody Winslet.
