A film where any of the secondary characters would have made a more interesting and inspiring protagonist - but it did try.
Special shout out to the “Give Up You Don’t Matter” sign that existed in the classroom and was never addressed.
I am AWARE that I’m not the target audience for this but explain to me WHY this movie follows Vivian, one of the most annoying characters I’ve ever seen in a teen movie, instead of Lucy, a black girl who has more moxie than literally any other character as she navigates a new school where sexism is the norm and women are told to keep their heads down to avoid harassment?
I liked that Vivian was called out for her overt whiteness by the end, but it doesn’t change the fact that any of the side characters would have made a more interesting protagonist.
I wouldn’t be so harsh on this movie if it felt like it was intended for a younger audience, but it genuinely felt as though these adult writers were trying to relate to progressive high-schoolers. Two of the writers of After (2019) wrote this so...yeah.
i, too, felt like i could start a revolution when i read my first piece of feminist theory
can’t believe this had such a diverse cast just to pick the white girl to lead “the revolution”......anyway nico hiraga if you are looking for a zine-making socialist irl hmu xxx
This movie was the depiction of performative activism. Feels like Amy Poehler discovered feminism and the song Rebel Girl by Bikini Kill a year ago and wanted to let everyone know. But let's break it down, shall we?
1) "straight cis skinny blonde white girl" that has been raised by a #girlboss of a mother finds out that the boys at her school are molesters only when a Black girl talks about it. you would expect something more by someone that has been raised by a self-proclaimed "burning bra" raging feminist
2) we have trans, queer, disabled and second-generation immigrants girls whose stories are being used like accessories to the "straight cis skinny white girl"
3) did "blonde white girl"…
Who is the person at netflix holding a gun to director’s heads and forcing them to open films with the main character writing their university application
i really enjoyed this despite the stars i gave it. the k records pin was a nice touch. so muuuuch radlib feminist buzzwords peppered in though that it was embarrassing if anyone was in the room while i was watching, huge notorious rbg energy. & idk if it was intentional but they seemed to give the cringiest liberal dialogue to the pocs, it was like they wanted to say the most basic feminist theory but needed someone with an identity that gives them moral superiority to deliver the line. tbf if a white kid said some of that shit it would have been even worse so idk. the relationship story with the hawaiian looking kid from that girl superbad movie that just came out a year or two ago. & the end walkout scene was cool with their lil teen rally & the teacher rocks can't remember his name atm
honestly.. half a star because i watched it on a date with yan — best part was the dream scream
Predictable and cringe in places but also really comforting and made me emotional - can see this being a comfort film
i could go on and explain why this movie’s activism and messaging is objectively bad but instead i would really like to question why these girls are already filling out college applications in JUNIOR YEAR?!?!?!?!
1. movie about riot grrrl music has one song (rebel girl) repeated and repeated?! it’s a good song but jeezzz netflix branch out to anything other than the most popular bikini kill song.
2. lucy or claudia should’ve been the main character in a movie about feminism
