This film takes the proof of concept that is “The Muppet Christmas Carol” and runs with it... by some metrics into the ground and out the other side. If we separate the classic Muppet films into two trilogies, this mirrors “The Great Muppet Caper”— pure and worshipful escapism.
This is blockbuster fare at it’s highest form, with a never-ending sea (pun intended) of puppet set-pieces at the absolute perfect time in history for puppet set-pieces. This is the Muppet’s grandest adventure, but it’s not purest-Muppets, and is perhaps the most far-from-center the Muppets ever theatrically veered.
It was an experiment, and one that didn’t seem to pay off. However, like “The Muppet Christmas Carol”, time views it favorably. An incredibly well made adventure film that offers unique thrills firmly in line with the Henson brand, and a one-of-a-kind blockbuster that is peak 1996. The CD-ROM game was also a notable and ambitious achievement.
