An important landmark for anime. Anno's work revolutionized the industry, genre-wise, and you can see it here with this film.
The animation is great, the Asuka vs Dummy Pilots remains one of the greatest anime fights. The cinematography is phenomenal, the action is amazing, the music goosebump-inducing.
In order to fully enjoy this film, you'd have to watch Neon Genesis Evangelion, of course. Then, you can see the beautiful character development towards the end of the film. Shinji's monologue was brief, but is honestly my favorite anime scene. Period. The music, scenery and context are just perfect.
I generally dislike ambiguous endings, and I did so the first time I watched this. However, it grew on me. I can interpret it as hope, or devastation, or the beginning, or the end. All we're left with is a new world.
