My fave Almodóvar since The Skin I Live In.
This is why I checked spoilers.... The ending had a great effect on me. It made me re-evaluate the earlier scenes I had issues with, specifically the flashbacks. I was enjoying the present day story with Asier Etxeandia much more. Then the reveal at the end made me suddenly love all the flashbacks retroactively. That was cool.
Asier Etxeandia is really solid in this film. I need to see more of his work.
Missed it in theaters so watched a screener link. But quite honestly, my only real problem with the film is the digital cinematography. We've seen what Almodóvar, production designer Antxón Gómez and cinematographer José Luis Alcaine can achieve on celluloid. Bad Education, Volver... some of the most beautiful films ever made. Compare the images of Pain and Glory with these earlier features and you can't deny the power of film.
