I feel like I'm destroying any credibility when I say this but, despite all the negativity around this, I don't think this is awful. Let me clarify, it's not good, it's just not terrible.
For starters, and really the strongest point of the movie, the apes look amazing. The acting isn't awful, and I'm not generally a Wahlberg fan. Then there’s the story and all that which are mediocre at best.
The problem here is that this movie has to do the Burton thing and go to the weird and bad places whenever given the chance. Put someone, anyone but Burton here and I legitimately believe this is a vastly improved movie.
As it stands, this is background noise. The less you pay attention, the better. You can enjoy some great costumes and makeup, some fascinating sets and when you don’t focus on it, you don’t have to deal with all the crazy.
