Mani Ratnam masterfully adapts Kalki’s cult historical fiction novel and delivers a delightful big screen cinematic experience. First most, kudos to the trio of MR- Jeyamohan- Elango Kumaravel for brilliantly translating such a vast and eventful storyline into an effectively concise narrative without losing out on its core essence. They have cleverly blended various scenes from the novel and knitted them in an astonishingly surprising organic manner. The sharply written dialogues are a major asset in boosting its dramatics. It’s stunningly staged with gorgeous cinematography, soulful musical score and top notch period production design.
For PS novel fans, it definitely is one huge pure treat as the emotional payoff is damn high with every passing scene. Given the plentiful characters…
Mani Ratnam take a fucking bow. Instant classic. Been his passion project for decades and the final product very clearly shows how much he's put into this movie.
Mani Ratnam is a master of the craft so no flaw to point out in his directing, writing, pacing of the film or any technical aspect. Love how it's still a very character centric story despite the grand scale of it, doesn't try to get you lost in it's world and keeps you in touch with its characters throughout, amazing stuff. Action sequences were fucking amazing, enjoyed every moment of it. AR Rahman is at his best here. Every track is just so beautiful man, sets the tone of almost every scene.…

I couldn't care or connect to the characters or the story. Its not bad, the spectacle aspect is still there, its watchable, but i don't think I'll remember this in a long run. The cinematography is eyecandy as usual (yes mani ratnam filming women is my favourite genre). Every other aspect is kinda mid, its not necessarily a complaint but if you're gonna make something in such a big scale it would've been nice if they gave a little bit of thought to it. Also the information conveyed in this movie can be too much, like they goof around for a while, then they drop a massive expostion lore detail, then they move on…

Ponniyin Selvan is as epic as the novel shows, but the same becomes the disadvantage in the film medium. A grandeur fest of epicness in visuals, characters, story and the Cholas. Mani Ratnam’s Ponniyin Selvan-1 respects its source material ,a gentle rendering of love, war, conspiracy and female guile. The film does not try to amplify any aspect of the novel unnecessarily to fit a narrative that might be the flavour of the season. In fact, it downplays the praise that Kalki lavished on the Chola dynasty, and sticks to narrating and staging the main events of the plot with a few omissions.

Watched FDFS (5 a.m. show).
Not that I expected much from this Mani Ratnam film (yea, yea, not a fan, still went for early morning show because of the hype). But that first half, powered by Karthi’s easy-going charm (easily, the best performer of the ensemble cast), gave me some hope. But then came Jayam Ravi (who plays the title character here, ironically) and the second half. The film started to sink from there on, that is, to me (from the crowd response, it was obvious that they loved it, don’t ask me why). After Karthi, Trisha is the star performer here. Vikram appears from nowhere here and there, and gives never-ending speech about his love for “Nandini” (Anniyan déjà vu??).

for me the story was secondary - i haven't read the book and in general when you add royalty and war strategies etc to anything i have a lot of trouble staying engaged - but whatever character development gaps were in the script, and whatever details i might not have figured out, were more than made up for with the level of depth in the performances. i can't even point to a side character that was less than memorable and vivid. vikram gets the most backstory and weighty acting moments, and his screen presence is so intense that a song and monologue are thrilling enough to be a pre-interval cliffhanger. also really loved karthi's charming goofball warrior, trisha and aishwarya…
In the Indian film industry of fantasy ridden epic movies, PS-1 is the most realistic epic history film.
I haven't read the books but I hope it respected, the source material in every way. Grandeur cinematography, production and direction. Each and every character was given proper screentime just except the titular character was shown after the banger interval scene. That was surprising. Atleast a few scenes in first half would've done justice.
It's freaking amazing to know this film exists finally in Mani Ratnam's filmography after so many years and the books fan following. Part 2 will and definitely be bigger and greater than this.. I don't know what I'm gonna do if it doesn't.
