I remember seeing this when I was in like 7th grade which was right around the time I started getting into film and I remember just being blown away by the visuals and creativity in the animation. Not very memorable or clear in terms of a story, a little messy, but a fun one.
The only Animated Feature winner I never saw before starting this project, I must say that I was absolutely stunned by the animation on this one. The lighting, the character designs, the environments, everything just pops and makes for such an engaging visual experience. I was really bored with the story for the first half hour or so but things really picked up after a while, leading to some truly breathtaking action sequences and genuinely funny moments. This is also decidedly NOT a kids movie, which is kind of refreshing. Nothing against kids movies, but it's nice to see a more adult take on a big-budget animated movie for a change.

I enjoyed this the first time I saw it, back when it first came out; didn't necessarily love it though. But now Rango is definitely one of my favorite animated movies ever. It's so incredibly bizarre, as well as one of the coolest freakin' things visually (definitely check it out on Blu-ray if possible). Johnny Depp's voice performance is perfect in bringing spectacular life to the character - same goes for the entire supporting cast, actually. And, of course, I absolutely love the Fear & Loathing references.
When this movie wants to be ugly, it's disgusting.
When it wants to be pretty, it's gorgeous.
When it wants to be surreal, it feels like something Dalí would paint.
Rango it's a movie that succeeds at almost everything it sets out to do.
A true love letter to spaghetti westerns (a certain man with no name makes a cameo), it captures the essense of the genre while also doing its own unique thing.
Sergio Leone would be proud.
Also maybe Hunter S. Thompson.

Gore Verbinski's knack for oddly mainstream surrealism remains unmatched, and maybe it's the reason why he still receives money for his projects. He at once embraces the worlds of his own making and is very much interested in protagonists that are aware of the insanity unfolding around them. It's what makes the first three Pirates films so delectable, as well as the riotous Lone Ranger and the subterranean terror of A Cure For Wellness. They are at once completely sincere and infected by self-reflexive tendencies. Rango, by comparison, is a family romp, but it's still really fucking weird, and it's constantly involved in its own lunacy by being a western adventure hybrid. The animation still startles with bright colors and a sense of movement and character detail that is still unlike anything America has produced since.
