Resident Evil: Extinction is a definite improvement over Apocalypse, not only in filmmaking competence but in world-building and franchise progression. Led by Russell Mulcahy, director of Highlander, The Shadow and the twisted brilliance that is Razorback, Extinction is a Resident Evil installment told through action, even more so than Anderson's original. Desolate, barren landscapes are evoked not though exposition but by the movements of bands of survivors and loosely connected set-piece moments. Buildings, structures, and monuments are remnants of a world lost, with diseased zombies populating it not only out of hunger but out of habit. Alice as a character is fascinating in this outing, mainly because of her added Telekinetic powers and the way she utilizes them to…
"yeah... kill a few, save a lot"
the search for purpose as an unforgiving, apocalyptic nightmare. the third best Mad Max movie.
Oh boy.
This was a treat.
That ending shot was fucking perfect.
I didn’t expect the story to go where it did.
And it’s leagues better then the last film.
Within the opening 5 minutes I was hooked.
Also any film that plays In A Gadda Da Vida while a truck runs over zombies gets my praise.
But wow.
The last film was a bit of a mess but this is completely focused it knows what it wants to be and it does it.
It’s got cliches but again there overshadowed by the action and story.
Also this just feels like the perfect expansion of the story.
Started of with a small infection. Then it got bigger. And now it’s…
"What's your name?"
"K-Mart. It's where they found me."
"Do you have another name?"
"I never liked it, and everyone I know is dead now."
i told yall these movies had a ~trans subtext~
This is the best one so far. From the opening moments it looks better than the previous movies, set in a desert landscape that is appropriate for its title, besides deserts always look awesome on film. In Resident Evil: Extinction they basically forego any plot and instead go with a simplistic ‘trying to get from point A to point B’ narrative. Thank you. If you aren’t going to write a compelling story in the first place you might as well abandon it all together, wise choice. A few characters from the last one return in addition to a new band of vagabonds including Claire Redfield, another slight nod to the games which by the way they have entirely given up…
"It's a murder honey, a group of crows is called a murder" - Homer Simpson (nif)
I just realized that I have nothing to offer a post-apocalyptic world and it has made me really sad.
Several years after the events of Apocalypse, Alice navigates a desert wasteland with a group of survivors trying to get to a new society. The Umbrella Corporation is hot on her heels, then... stuff happens. It's got a Mad Max/The Walking Dead crossover vibe that isn't very original but is in fact kind of fun.
I will say that this is the first film in the series that makes me feel like they cared some about the characters and weren't just trying to replicate a…
Russell Mulcahy does action better than Alexander Witt did in the last film, but it's too much of the smear and jumble variety for my taste. The Road Warrior desert dust and grime gives this film the most tangible environment in the series, even as it dives headfirst into CGI land, with the Hitchcock crows and mutant Ser Jorah Mormont. I admire PWSA's decision to just skip over the end of the world in an opening voiceover. The end of the last film has Alice joining a well-organized resistance group fighting a PR war against Umbrella. But never mind that: the earth is dead!
These movies fail at being good movies and good video game adaptations but damn Milla Jovovich looks so good. She looks better in each installment.
A bit of Mad Max, Carrie, The Birds and Cube! When Milla Jovovich isn't kickin zombies she slices, dices, and makes julienne fries out of them! I tell you the girl's got some mad knife skills! Should she ever tire of her acting gig I'm pretty sure she could wow them at Benihana's!
The change of setting to a stark wasteland was a pretty genius move, packing in so many influences it’s hard to keep track of. Mostly it boils down to a rif on the Road Warrior with a bit of Day of the Dead thrown in there but there’s even a bit of the Birds too. Zombie crows is something I never thought I’d be saying but I’m glad I am. This also features what’s easily the best action of the series so far, bloody and visceral, with a heavier use of practical effects making some of the kills surprisingly brutal. Mulchay pretty effectively incorporates these environments into the action making great use of armored vehicles (even without a Mad Max style car chase!) and fenced in compounds for his set-pieces plus Jovovich is game as always, selling it all effortlessly.
Might be the best one yet or at least the most watchable. Would have made a good end to the series too actually now I think about it since it had a proper villain doing villainy things. It did feel the most like the games in that way. Alice's powers are truly whatever you want them to be!
Wesker sucks - I miss the fluctuating British accent depend on how evil he wants to appear.
Still really hate the intense music at the end with the sequel hook. Leaves a bad taste in my mouth everytime.
a group of survivors, navigating a harsh unforgiving world. the forests have died, the water has dried, undead roam. years have gone by. their journey takes them to las vegas where one character asks: "what happened to las vegas?"
Continuing my watch through of this series, and as expected it’s not really improving - we have here half a VOD bog standard zombie survival film and half an engagement with the industrialism gone wild human experimentation stuff. They do marry up at the end, but I was kind of past caring by then.
The rest is a mess of bad CGI, cliche characters in skimpy clothing and the return of wooden second raters from the second film to act as cannon fodder. Milla Jovovich still struggles to convey talent for either acting or stunts.
On to the next one.
Stepping up those graphics. I've come to a conclusion that no one is safe in this film and I shouldn't get attached to any of them.
