Two words you wouldn’t expect in the same sentence: ‘kitchen-sink’ and ‘robots’. Ok that’s three words. Either way, that’s what Jon Wright’s third feature serves up and it’s a really quite bizarre concoction, one indeed that doesn’t particularly work. Robot Overlords is basically what happens if you cross EastEnders with Battlestar Galactica; alien robots invade the planet, on the premise of studying humans who they lock away in their homes with tracking devices on their necks, which if they go outside summon robot gunships that blow them to smithereens - but a group of plucky young Laaaandaaaners discover not only is there a (remarkably easy to create) flaw in the robots tech which allows them outside, but lo and behold…
With the talents of GILLIAN ANDERSON and BEN KINGSLEY you expect something special, but instead we get something so mediocre and bland i ALMOST turned off before the end
Without those two big names i am pretty sure this movie would have disappeared into oblivion without a trace of publicity.
Throws everything into a blender, but still manage to miss hitting on anything interesting. Well Ben Kingsley was pretty fun as a traitor human, and the mediator human was a little disconcerting.

I know this movie is only 90 minutes long, but I swear I felt like I was watching this for about 6 hours. The plot, writing, and special effects are all on par with with a Syfy channel original film, and not in a laughable way. Well I guess some of it is actually pretty hilarious with how bad it is, but still it just stinks. I wasn't expecting this to be anything spectacular, but I at least expected some dumb/badass robot action sequences and there was close none of that. It's mostly just people walking around and then occasionally hiding from robots. I will say that the acting actually isn't all that bad, but the script they're working with…
After the splendid Grabbers, Jon Wright's follow-up is a real letdown and no mistake.
A YA sci-fi actioner that has the potential to have been something rather interesting and entertaining, but is wasted on relying instead on its more tired aspects and some distinctly mixed performances. As much as it's enjoyable seeing Ben Kingsley (adopting a Yorkshire accent, for some reason, but also nailing it) slinging himself into all manner of low expectation actioners these days, his role is the only one that really possesses any semblance of actual character.
Gillian Anderson flaps around to no great enjoyment and the kids are all pretty much as bland as I hoped they wouldn't be. Credit, I guess, to Wright for trying…
remember eddie furlongs dope public enemy tee in t2? this is set in the future but a kid wears a hot topic unknown pleasures shirt for the entire movie
One of the weirdest cinema releases of the year.
Even though the poster art is absolutely terrible, Robot Overlords is a relatively well made film for the most part. The effects range from surprisingly impressive to hilariously bad, but the cinematography is good and the performances largely don't suck.
Still, there's not much here you haven't seen before and the script itself is an unsavoury blend of corny and bland. The abundance of bad language is itself quite strange, considering that the film is being marketed as a family film. I counted the following expletives during my viewing, some of which are used several times: bullshit, tits, balls, arse, sheize, shit, crap, shitbag, bastard, shagging, bollocks, shat, and even a…
This movie had some hate around it with some bad reviews that initially dissuaded me from watching it, but it's from the same director that gave us Grabbers and it has Ben Kingsley and Gillian Anderson so I finally gave it a shot. This movie is far from the best, but it's entertaining and it has some nice visuals. I also really liked what the main character did to turn the tide late in the film. I would be remiss in straight up recommending this, but I didn't hate it and I think this is fun enough for the right audience.
After watching Ben Kingsley (IRON MAN THREE, SECURITY, THE WALK) totally own it in OPERATION FINALE, I decided to watch another Ben Kingsley (THE BOXTROLLS, SNEAKERS) movie. One that also has Gillian Anderson (THE LAST KING OF SCOTLAND). Also robots. Luckily despite the poster/artwork/whatever looking like one, this is not an Asylum production. Unluckily this is not a very exciting movie. It's an awful and unfunny cliche to say a European story is "European" instead of boring so I won't go there, plus it's not boring just uninvolving. It's more impressive to see how well they stretched their budget and also the enjoyment of seeing another countries take on this kind of movie. It's more character-based but none of these…
'That's not mouth to mouth...'
Jon Wright is a budding, Irish film-maker that has been on my radar for quite some time. His earlier films 'Tormented' and 'Grabbers' left a lasting impression, a director who could create minor horror and tension, and knew how to parlay that with good old humour. Yet, with his latest offering of 'Robot Overlords', I found myself left wanting.
Robot Overlords is effective in a family friendly sci-fi kinda way, with many enjoyable elements from franchises gone by nodded at. The CGI is perhaps ambitious for a low budget affair, and it does show at times, with the robots looking a little cartoony, but the overseer was well done. The adventure feels like a BBC…
THIS WAS A SURPRISE BECAUSE FRANKLY WITH A NAME LIKE ROBOT OVERLORDS MY EXPECTATIONS WERE ABOUT NEGATIVE FIVE STARS but it was fun and light and really really genuine???? the plot was a little lacklustre, yeah, but it hit strong emotional beats plus gillian anderson gave ben kingsley the finger what more could you want?
Throws everything into a blender, but still manage to miss hitting on anything interesting. Well Ben Kingsley was pretty fun as a traitor human, and the mediator human was a little disconcerting.
A very impressive student film. Definitely the best Isle of Man based extraterrestrial robot movie ever made.
This one is a good film. It is under rated for it's time of release, and still is today. If you enjoy a movie that has end of humanity, or endangered humanity, you'll enjoy this film. It also has Gillian Anderson(Dana Scully, X Files),Ben Kingsly, and Callan McAuliffe.A short summery is that alien robots come to Earth and assert their control over humanity. They claim that they only want to observe humanity. They enforce a strict no one allowed outside rule. They implant humans with a device that alerts sentries to anyone who goes outside and if they refuse to comply they are destroyed.
When i say DONT WATCH THIS , i mean it. It's a non-movie with really bad actors and writting... I wont evento try.
In this two hour movie, Ben Kingsley has a total of ten minutes onscreen time. The bag he collected from this, god damn.
Robot Overlords is a mixed bag. Its British setting and mild sensibility gives it a fresh feel, and the cast do well in their roles. Unfortunately, the film suffers from uneven pacing, a silly premise and a poor plot. As a result, the film constantly switches between moderately interesting and relatively cringeworthy, which may work for a Doctor Who episode, but I'm not sure it holds up for a feature film.
