In high school, I was super fascinated with sex. I was also paranoid, and I was afraid to search out anything explicit online. I took the "18 and older" warning seriously; I thought if the government caught 17 yo me looking at porn, they would arrest me. So. I turned to softcore in movies to help me understand sex, and you know, get a little titillation.
At first, watching softcore was either by accident or by chance. I watched a ton of movies on my iPod touch's Crackle app because I could easily sneak these viewings from the comfort of my bed with my headphones in. It was a joy (honestly) to stumble upon the made-for-men erotica of Heavy Metal.…
”BITCH! Why you mad? Cause my pussy pops SEVERELY and yours DON’T.”
— Lee Holloway (Maggie Gyllenhaal) to Anastasia Steele (Dakota Johnson)
i have a weakness for romances where both parties are disgusting awkward weirdos who enjoy absurd sex
I'm afraid this is going to be one of those reviews where I end up going on and on and on about someone in it rather than being about the actual film. Sorry.
It seems to be quite a personal trait. Whenever I read reviews from people on my activity page, they may well pay some attention to the performances and the people in it but they can usually reign themselves in to the point where they actually mention other aspects of the film in some depth. Me? I just go on aimlessly deconstructing and then reconstructing the performances in the film and completely forgetting half of what I was going to say when the film finished.
But why change…
That scene where she keeps trying to get her high school sweetheart to spank her is honestly so me.
Who's to say that love needs to be soft and gentle?
-Dr. Twardon
First time I've had the chance to see the entire film.
The reason I liked this movie isn't because of the odd subject matter, but because the "love story", for lack of a better term, seems more heart felt and genuine to me then most romantic films that seem to come out every year. James Spader and Maggie Gyllenhaal are damn near perfect for these roles making Peter and Lee seem just like normal people struggling to understand who they are.

"Each cut, each scar, each burn, a different mood or time. I told him what the first one was. I told him where the second one came from. I remembered them all. And for the first time in my life, I felt beautiful. Finally part of the earth. I touched the soil, and he loved me back."
Beautiful!
Unfortunately, most films about D/s (Dominance and submission) are not only wildly inaccurate, but they can be downright harmful (looking at you Fifty Shades). They often glorify certain aspects of the lifestyle, while failing to provide a better understanding of the…
I watched this first as a curious teen and quite a few more times over the years, something kept drawing me to it and I went online to see what also this sadomasochism stuff was about.
Well the last time I watched this was with my girlfriend who I'm in a D/s relationship with. Interestingly her relationship with this film is very similar to mine. She watched it first when she was young and curious and me and her agree it was one of those pivotal moments that made us realise this is the type of relationship we wanted.
An excellent portrayal of a loving BDSM relationship can be found here as well. Not perfect, but I've certainly yet to see a better one in the movies. Without a doubt far superior to that awful franchise that shall not be named.
Genial y muy divertido romance sadomasoquista. La química entre James Spader y una sensual Maggie Gylenhaal es brillante.
Wish that scene in the woods was longer and not a cutaway. Anyways, there are parts of the last 30ish minutes of this that I didn’t enjoy at all as it goes beyond bdsm into straight up psychopathy, but hey, I don’t kink-shame. Good thing Lee wasn’t on her period in that wedding dress. Homegirl would have gotten TSS!
Why are all movies I've seen about BDSM good? Is it just that these relationships more explictly explore power dynamics so they can ignore the forced conflicts of many rom coms. Or maybe it says more about me...
i have literally no idea what to say but yeah this might be another comfort movie that shouldnt be a comfort movie
