  a takedown of bureaocracy that honestly believes we can do better, that we're capable of more...instead of blame and anger this presents an optimistic vision of a world where evil comes from pain and sadness but can be dealt with, most people are not evil, just ignorant or flawed, where we all make mistakes but ultimately can rise above them. bless this for being so full of hope and the beauty of humanity, not of humans as individuals with backstories but as a connected group of quirks and facial expressions and body language and feelings, individuals but part of a collective. this is bizarre and funny and heartbreaking, immersive and energetic. we jump in with both feet and don't stop…

  Maybe only Anno could have made something so weirdly modern, a simultaneously sincere and completely absurd anti-kaiju that begins as a nightmare bureaucratic comedy of errors then pivots to fully embrace a collectivist Japanese spirit of ingenuity, all of it a reflection of the country's psychic fallout from Fukushima. And that's setting aside the terrific CG version of suit-mation (I know, I'm as surprised as you are). Not necessarily the most exciting movie, but certainly one of the most fascinating and engaged films in the long history of this series.

  Opens as a bureaucratic farce, with lanyard nerds moving from boardroom to slightly bigger boardroom while civilian lives are being lost--most interesting is how Anno and Higuchi capture their futility in the filmmaking, very few compositions in each of the setups match so that the visual information is always slightly shifting (not dissimilar from the dialogue, a bunch of contributing voices not really saying much of anything) while the off-rhythm rapid cuts don't allow you the proper time to even process any information of any kind, putting us in lockstep with the characters' sense of overwhelming panic--and then slowly transitions into an optimistic ode to our ability to collectively overcome our fears. Mankind is a chaotic, impractical mess of lone wolves, nerds, troublemakers, outcasts, academic heretics and general pains-in-the-bureacracy... but together, we're capable of some pretty extraordinary things.

  “The fact is that there has been a large number of victims.” The profound desire of the gods. A beautiful rendering of the monster movie stripped to its essence, the state versus nature’s force and inevitability. Man’s folly and man’s ingenuity. The human factor against nature unreadability. This is full of pathos and humor. The bureaucracy comedy of errors slowly giving away to a celebration of Japan collectivism. Shin Godzilla even does something that has eluded blockbuster cinema of the past 15 years and find a manner to represent large scale urban destruction that makes all the wasted fake concrete still sting. The word Fukushima is never mentioned, but it remains there as subtext and there is no surprise this…

  Shin Godzilla has my favorite Godzilla design of any Godzilla movie. Driven, pained, wild-eyed, powered by inner fire, rapidly mutating to adapt to its environment, this Godzilla is not bemused and regal, not deciding but reacting. Godzilla is a truly a god, a god summoned by humanity's splitting of the atom and the changes this has wrought in the world. This movie though, isn't as much about Godzilla as it is about how the Japanese government responds to the arrival of Godzilla, what decisions it makes, how it makes those decisions, how it collects information to make those decisions and by what means those decisions are executed.   All of the analogies and everything everyone’s said about the politicians struggling with bureaucratic red tape while attempting to deal with the inability to contain a disaster is true and Godzilla’s incredible catastrophic laser destruction scene is utterly jaw dropping—but I couldn’t help but think about what this really says about life in general... and that nobody will ever tell you when it comes down to it, no one, and I mean no one, has any clue what they are doing in life no matter how much they think they do.

  8 billion lost souls shipwrecked on a planet that will one day sink into the vast ocean of space, without a clue as to what to do next and no real backup plan.

  Scary shit of you let your mind wander.
