the erotic fantasies of men sealed away behind cheap panelling, escaping quietly but audibly while working-class women talk of the world outside as comedy and melodrama. the male gaze scorned by a pair of giant, tacky neon eyes; the vulgarity of the world met with exactly the personal vulgarity it merits. a private joke, told in a dark stretch of road just before dawn
Kind of a perfect film in miniature, a real-time document of little more than an uneventful night out that recalls a queer version of one of Rohmer's effortless microdramas. Each of Marie-Claude Treilhou’s three scenes — the end of a shift working at a straight porno theater, a trip to a lesbian bar, driving home with a stranger — couldn’t be more stylistically or tonally different, but combined create a portrait of urban loneliness and a flippant commentary on patriarchal control that’s never anything less than totally entertaining or quietly moving. I loved this.
I’d be shocked if this wasn’t an influence on Théo & Hugo and (especially) Knife + Heart.
the porn theater in the film was showing something called “take me quick i’m wet” and the whole time i thought it was the name of this movie

u rly have to respect france for being like "we are the birthplace of cinema" and then BOOM 20 minutes of 2 people talking in a car. jk jk i liked it, really good 'life is terrible, dude' cinema
I liked this quite a bit the but the rip I grabbed had really poor subtitles which hindered my appreciation
A long night in three locations. Unconstrained by the kind of narrative that ordinarily drives a film from place to place, we're free to bask in the perfect particulars of place: the lobby of a Parisian porno theater (and all the men who come through it), a lesbian nightclub down the street, and a drive home with a stranger. All held together by an effortless lead performance from Ingrid Bourgoin. If there's any doubt that the amazing nightclub (the fencing act, the house band, the classy staff!) was an influence on the one in Knife + Heart, there's a direct nod, as Bourgoin also turns up there in that latter movie. A postcard from 1979 that conveys more than many much more elaborately-constructed films manage to.
I want a thousand films like Simone Barbès. All with a rotating cast composed of Bourgoin, Delahaye, Surgère, Saviange, Bouvet and the rest of the Diagonale stock company. All about the little dramas and fleeting moments of everyday life.
I love every Diagonale-affiliated filmmakers but Marie-Claude Treilhou is the best at staging and observing ordinary people in a way that feels so honest and real and that is simultaneously pure cinema. Characters with seconds of screen-time and no lines manage to have memorable presences ; that's a gift. I should rewatch this every time I fall in the trap of cynicism and misanthropy because this is the closest a film can get to being a cure for that particular ailment. Simone for ever.
Long portions of this didn't really do it for me, but the constant noises accompanying the opening doors in the first act, the casual shooting, and the mustache each delighted me to the point where I wrote off the lesser scenes.
probably flawless (but I struggled with the poor subtitles :((((
i want to get to an image focused manner of viewing films but i'm not there yet :(
Hangout movie that takes you through a Paris night, starting in a porn cinema, continuing in a lesbian bar and ending in a stranger‘s car. Possessed of a great charm and levity.
