my least favorite kind of film is the one that clearly is about racism subtextually but for whatever reason the filmmakers are more interested in a more ambiguous “people are just self-absorbed and cruel to each other” theme.
ingrid goes west has the same problem, where it’s clear what ingrid wants is proximity to whiteness but the film just settles on “doesn’t loneliness and social media make bitches crazy???”
what is the point of casting a Black woman in a role like this, making her trauma rooted in white girls bullying her and then not seeing the implications of that through in the remainder of the film?

One of the most pleasant surprises of 2022, Sissy completely subverts the slasher genre with its social media commentary and innovative horror visions. It's unpredictable, suspenseful, and ultimately satisfying.
Horrors about bullying and revenge are not uncommon, but Sissy has created a quite intriguing entry to the subgenre, thanks to its superb writing. The oversaturated premise of a get-together gone wrong is executed here with utmost style, gore and clever plot devices to ensure a hair-raising, uncomfortable experience.
Acting wise Aisha Dee is the absolute heart of the ensemble, playing the titular character with unbelievable range and presence. It's also admirable how the story brings the spotlight to the issues of mental health in its own provocative manner. Overall Sissy is a worthwhile fun ride that offers horror and comedy in equal measure. Highly recommended.
This was insane, I loved it. Great performances, strong writing that does its best in creating the atmosphere and introducing the characters before all hell break loose and some grisly kills. I'm still wondering why she brought the hair dye to begin with but other than that you're loved, you're special, you're enough and you're doing your best.
This is one of those horror films that’s so damn satisfying to see the characters get their comeuppance. Sissy (Cecilia) is my type of gal, the quiet type who bottles it all up and then one day just completely snaps. Hahaha. Love it. A very awkward movie for the most part, it gave me vibes of MAY.. I love that it’s so woke but also made fun of wokeness, very clever. The only thing that irked me a bit was the music, the whimsical music grew a bit tired after a while.
Aisha Dee was great here, nice to see her in something Australian too because I’ve only seen her in American things, this is actually the first time I’ve heard her talking in her natural accent.
You know you've hit the jackpot when you find a movie that twists several of the genre's conventions on their heads. Don't want to give too much away because that would ruin the experience and possibly any surprise (haven't seen any trailers leading up to this, so not sure if they gave away the big twist), but it was fantastic to see all the tables turned and how it all played out.

First and foremost, this isn’t really a slasher. So that was kind of disappointing since it was my week to make the slasher pick. Second, this took a really long time to get going. I want to say the setup took 45-50 minutes before any deaths take place. (That might be a gripe meant specifically for the expectation that this was a slasher). Additionally, nearly all of the characters were annoying except for maybe Cecily….maybe. In a way this felt a bit like Bodies, Bodies, Bodies in that regard, except with Aussie accents and the body count doesn’t start piling up until the third act. This is an unexpected favorite! A stylish, quirky, gory, anxiety-inducing psychological horror/dark comedy from Australia that mostly hits all the right marks while establishing an emotional journey. There are some incredibly awkward moments and some incredibly cringe moments, and they are done to perfection. The cast is perfect and fleshed out enough for you to care about them. Some satisfying gore as well. The visual aesthetic of this also helps carrying the film as this has great contrast between magical, childish moments and splattery gore. I wish there were a little more satirical bite to it, otherwise this is a massively entertaining film and fans of the genre definitely need to check this out.
