Quite conventional, but shines in its execution. Despite the genre tropes, it’s hard not to appreciate the sheer brutality shown on screen, let alone that the film is quite entertaining throughout. Julius Avery definitely shows promise here as a filmmaker, most notably in how the film is shot.
But where Son of a Gun really shines is in the cast. Brenton Thwaites is quite good here, and Alicia Vikander is even better. However, this is Ewan McGregor’s show as the criminal who takes Thwaites under his wing.
Overall, Son of a Gun is nothing you haven’t seen before, but for a directorial debut, there is some promise shown on screen, and I’m curious to see what Julius Avery does with Overlord.
