if the boys in primary school who went around folding their eyelids inside out to impress each other took turns writing lines for a script
subverts the entire notion of "low brow" by inherently transforming what is considered low brow and crude into something high brow and clever, even profound. maybe not my absolute favorite film of the year but quite possibly the most creative and imaginative film of '16. also taps into the subconscious of its protagonist in such a hilarious and fantastical way that I can guarantee you've never seen a character study done even remotely in this fashion. and my god, that score; I love Manchester Orchestra (as well as pretty much any project that has ever involved Andy Hull) and my love for them now extends even further.
really glad i gave this one a reevaluation!! i think i always liked it but on this watch the fairly obvious message of "it's about depression, hank is literally reanimating a once-dead part of himself through manny" really clicked into place. and i was much more primed to marvel at the production design! astounding. it's like if michel gondry made Castaway. and the score is SO good, hot damn. read that a lot of the songs were composed before shooting, which is crazy, but damn it's cool that it worked. how the fuck did they shoot this movie in just 22 days. not a joke when i say i think it's radcliffe's finest performance, i think it's a lot harder to pull this off than it looks
