This is one of those films like “Crash” where seperate character stories wind up coming together. The tone is all over the place as is the pacing, it feels like there’s too much going on and it’s so melodramatic and over the top at points that it becomes exhausting.
Having said that there are some interesting elements, the whole concept is based around a ancient Chinese proverb that breaks life down into four emotions: Happiness (Whitaker), Pleasure (Fraser), Sorrow (Gellar) and Love (Bacon).
I can appreciate the intent even if it ends up failing. Sarah Michelle Gellar gives her all, Brendon Fraser is surprisingly understated while Forest Whitaker and Kevin Bacon feel criminally underused. It’s worth a look if you happen upon it but it will frustrate you, there’s a much better movie in here somewhere then what we end up getting.
