"And to the dust we shall return."
This dogmatic religious dystopia brought to you by Apple® iPods®, Beats™ by Dre earbuds, KFC™ moist towelettes, and Motorola® megaphones. Consume our meaningless junk to help you forget about how that same consumption fuels our planet's constant degradation.
That's really an unfairly reductive summary of the film, but at least it gets a lot of my problems with it out of the way early. It's no secret that The Book of Eli is overbearing in its religious sentiment and ironically reliant on capitalist ideology (Denzel Washington and Gary Oldman's love of The Book rather than The Religion, Tom Waits's pawn shop bartering; "How come it is easier for us to imagine the end…
This is one of those movies I'll always watch whenever I come across it on TV.
Absolutely love the story. Very creative and well executed.
come for the sadism and bountiful plot holes, stay for Denzel and the cardboard color grading
The post-apocalyptic genre have been explored too many a time, but The Book Of Eli offers a beyond average end-of-the-world experience. This Denzel Washington starrer explores religious boundaries wthout ovestepping it's welcome. The Book of Eli also boasts gripping cinematography and an unsurprisingly stable performance from Gary Oldman. At it's best, this neo-western action threw several surprises and some personal pondering on it's weakest. Is it a Christian propaganda movie? Maybe. But does Denzel kick-ass when he wants to? Absolutely.
I find myself deeply torn on where I land with The Book of Eli.
On one hand, I find the religious elements almost too aggressive in their expression. Mila Kunis plays a really promising female character who unfortunately rarely embodies anything more than a rare female presence on screen.
On the other, the visual style is captivating, despite its emphasis on bleakness. The choreography of action sequences is displayed impressively. Denzel Washington bodies his role. Even with knowing the big twist ahead of time, the reveal feels greatly satisfying. The world the film takes place in its super intriguing, in its organized, chaotic structures and its many characters. I just wish that world has been expanded on a bit more! …
The only thing this movie is really good for is if you want to see every mediocre movie in which Tom Waits turns in a perfect performance or if you just want to hear Tom Waits talk for five minutes or see Tom Waits' face or just be reminded that the world is a better place because Tom Waits is in it.
This bleached-out and literate post-apocalyptic traveler's tale supplies a strong vehicle for its leads, Denzel Washington and Gary Oldman. It's a solid and smart action picture.

Love how unapologetically goofy this is, while also being so genuine with its heavy religious aspects that are in your face. Denzel learned ultra instinct, a divine technique of the gods before Goku. Allowing him to make the world a better place. How to use one’s divine tools as a method to create knowledge that perpetuates unity and not destruction. Denzel really is a god among men. 😎✊🏾🤩🙆🏾♂️
