The loss of their young daughter threatens to destroy the love and faith of two married musicians.
Alabama Monroe, Разорванный круг, 愛的餘燼
This film shattered me,
Until I was sprawled,
In a broken circle,
On the floor.
Yes, this is a manipulative, depressing, heartbreaking, frustrating, challenging and emotionally destructive film, but it is also one of my new favorite (if you can even call it a favorite) films of all-time.
And for those exact reasons.
Life is manipulative.
Life is depressing.
Life is heartbreaking
Life is frustrating.
Life is challenging and emotionally destructive.
Have you ever lost a loved one, a close family member -
Maybe even to that evil thing we call cancer?
I lost my father.
I've felt the pain,
Of a broken circle.
I can still feel its pain.
As I'm sure you can and have too.
But I can't say anything more about this movie.
And I don't think that I'll ever watch it again.
Well...shit. That was rough. Beautiful, but rough. Basically this is like Blue Valentine if you were to throw a child with terminal cancer into the already bleak and depressing picture. The experience of watching this is like getting a cinematic blow from a sledgehammer to the gut.
This thing shattered me...I was broken by the end. To give a idea of how powerful and sad this film is...I watched this right after seeing 12 Years a Slave and this one has stuck with me way more, like a gray cloud floating over me that I can't get out of my mind. Without giving too much away...seeing this couple go through what they do is heartbreaking...but the film is done in…
What a heartbreaking love story this was! The Broken Circle Breakdown is tough to watch at times and is a genuine representation of the way people cope with tragedies and religious beliefs. It's also about the passion for music and how it can unite two completely different people. I felt like the movie got carried away on occasion by prolonging too much Didier's obsession with political ramifications of stem-cell research. Still, Johan Heldenbergh showed such great intensity on those speeches, making the scenes quite riveting to watch. Veerle Baetens as his other half, Elise, was just as incredible, displaying not only immense talent onstage but also a remarkable dramatic performance. The Broken Circle Breakdown is one of the best films I've seen from 2013 now and it should definitely be experienced by more people.
i feel like this movie just hate-fucked me (in the gentlest way possible).
didactics of the second half go a long way to defanging this otherwise absurdly potent folk drama, which plays like BLUE VALENTINE meets DECLARATION OF WAR blended with WALK THE LINE. but as needlessly transparent as the film's drama forces its themes to become, the last shot confirms that the movie just gives zero fucks about leaving you with any lasting comfort, and there's something perversely admirable about that.
Twenty-eighth watch of March around the World: Belgium. Didier, the banjo player of a Belgian bluegrass band, falls in love with the tattooist Elise and together they get a little girl named Maybelle. Around her sixth birthday, Maybelle is diagnosed with cancer, which is a hindrance in the togetherness of Didier and Elise. Where the former seeks refuge in scientism, the latter does so in spiritualism. The Broken Circle Breakdown takes an unchronological approach to its storytelling. A stylistic devise that has been applied thousands of times before, but it must be said that the execution here is really rather charming and sophisticated. A more orthodox approach wouldn’t be able to bring about the same emotional rollercoaster and possibly result…
Very touchy. Life is a mixtape of happiness and sadness, and you have to deal in every situation.
Johan Heldenbergh... You're awesome. Veerle Baetens.... you are gorgeous.
very well-acted, brilliantly directed. Awesome locations, beautiful cinematography, and soundtracks are so so soooooo awesome.
God, I cried while watching it and I loved this film.
Yes, I found some This Is Us and A Star Is Born type vibes, but still, it's a MASTERPIECE.
Well, let’s start with the positives. While not a bluegrass aficionado, I completely loved the BCB band, and appreciated the care and love these actors brought to the music. The dedication here is reminiscent of Alan Parker’s 1991 magnificent ode to salvation through song, The Commitments. What Parker did for soul, director Felix Van Groeningen and writer / star Johan Heldenberg could well have done for bluegrass.
When you have an ensemble whose musical performances are this strong, and the musical genre so rich and textured, you could almost hang any type of story on that framework and come up with success. Writer Roddy Doyle’s rags to fame to greed to rags tale complements the gut busting soulful yelps to…
I didn't start the day contemplating suicide, but after watching The Broken Circle Breakdown I think I might just get a running start and jump out my second story fucking window. What a depressing film! Life, love, loss, oh the fucking loss. It's all here and it's really painful to watch.
In this Best Foreign Language film nominee from Belgium Elise (Veerle Baetens) and Didier (Johan Heldenbergh) fall in love at first sight. He's a romantic atheist while she's a religious realist, but they just click and it works. It's not until their daughter becomes seriously ill that their love is put to the test.
Man Felix Van Groenningen's The Broken Circle Breakdown put me through the ringer when it…
This is basically a Hollywood melodrama which swings between the world of cheap tearjerkers and multilayered emotionally rich existential dramas. It has an engaging and promising first third and a very impressive final third but in the middle Felix Van Groeningen’s film is completely lost as he is not sure about his next move which leads to some totally irrelevant dialogues, events and character developments. Seemingly Van Groeningen, like his characters, is obsessed with American culture and thus shapes his movie like a typical Hollywood production and that gives his film an ever-present absurd look, although the final product is fortunately a satisfying movie but with the talent involved in front of the camera and given Van Groeningen’s own…
Belgium’s foreign language entrant for the 2014 Academy Awards has received many comparisons with Derek Cianfrance’s Blue Valentine due to their shared subject matter and fractured narrative structure. Unfortunately, the similarities end there as The Broken Circle Breakdown is a heavy handed melodrama that lacks the emotional honesty of Cianfrance’s Sundance favourite.
Felix Van Groeningen’s disjointed melodrama documents the blossoming and destruction of the relationship between a bluegrass guitarist and his tattoo artist wife who suffer a great tragedy when their daughter is diagnosed with cancer. Capturing the highs and lows of their relationship via fractured snippets that constantly cut back and forth in time, the film attempts to tackle weighty issues but continually fudges its major moments.
"I always knew. That it was too good to be true. That it couldn't last. That life isn't like that, life isn't generous. You mustn't love someone. You mustn't become attached to someone. Life begrudges you that. It takes everything away from you and it laughs in your face. It betrays you."
Holy shit, people really weren't kidding when they said this film was depressing. It's heartbreaking, so much that some audiences lose sight of how incredibly made this film is. This film is the epitome of why I love foreign film (same can be said about The Hunt): it doesn't hold back. It's a raw, honest, cynical…
The Broken Circle Breakdown is an intensely moving cinema about passion, love, loss & sadness and paints a very touching portrait of two people who fall madly in love, start a family & pursue their passions together but when an unexpected tragedy hits their young daughter, their relationship, love for each other & everything they believe in is put to test while also setting in motion a chain of events that end up truly devastating for each one of them.
A very nicely written story that is even more beautifully invigorated on the screen by the director and with the help of strong performances from the cast & exceptional use of music, it brings alive a grounded life of two very different people trying…
Biliyordum aslinda hep biliyordum.. Gercek olmayacak kadar güzel oldugunu… Uzun sürmeyeceğini.. Hayatin bu kadar cömert olmadigini… Birini sevmemelisin, birine baglanmamalisin. Hayat seni kiskanir. Elinden herseyini alir ve yüzüne güler…
Probably the best Flemish film I've ever seen
I've seen quite a lot of films about relationships breaking apart, all inter cut with flashbacks of when they got together, and they all basically come back to Annie Hall, but while The Broken Circle Breakdown may not be particularly original, it's notably feels a lot different to the other films it resembles due to its unique backdrop of the Belgian country-and-western music scene and the tragic event that causes the fault-lines in the marriage to appear, which is very well-judged and moving. Its attempts to draw parallels between the music and the drama aren't very successful, and there are two moments where they all sing at very inopportune times that I thought were pretty misjudged, but separately the music works and the drama works really well, with fantastic performances and intelligent, well-executed observations.

Beautiful, intimate, and emotional. Exceptionally crafted across the board with heartbreaking performances and astonishing storytelling. All the beats hit perfectly and it goes above and beyond. The music is also amazing with the two leads having such powerful and sensual voices. At times the story can get a bit repetitive but ultimately this heartfelt journey about grief and loss pulls through.
What a picture. Good picture yeah.
Watched for Film Twitter Hall of Fame, Belgian Movie.
It's simple yet INCREDIBLY complex. It's a bit of a hard watch too. Lots of sadness to go around. A lot like "A Star is Born" as well. Two people in love with themselves and with the music but stuff happens and it breaks them up inside and tears them apart.
The music is great and "Poor Way-Fairing Stranger" is both beautifully sung and emotionally resonant with the images shown on screen as playing.
The ending of this movie is amazingly touching as well and the performances from the two leads are magnificent. Gotta check out Beautiful Boy from this Director now as well.
I love stories about grief & mourning the painful past a dear lost beloved or losing oneself. i love that part people deal with their vulnerability & sadness on their way to survive it & get over it and come to terms with living with it at the end..That's life.
The two powerful central performances don’t manage to mitigate the triteness of the narrative, nor does the non-linear structure. The bluegrass music is nice, but its implementation feels disconnected from the thrust of the main story. The political commentary is a little on the nose too, and the general feeling I’m left with is that the film tried to do too much on too small a canvas.
