Okay so yall dont know this but asian horror/thriller is probs one of my fav branches of horror/thriller. A good asian horror/thriller? I'm always gonna be streaming. Fax. So I was delighted to get to this. It starts off very strong with a beautiful friendship between the past and the present. It has great acting. Very bright colourful neon palette. Which I was digging.
However here is the problem. It has a great concept however it's sloppy when it comes to concept execution because nothing really makes sense. Like there is no logic to the concept. You just have to accept the concept even tho how it is done has no logic behind it. It's full of plot holes. It…
Never answer a phone call from a number you don’t recognize, as it can carry heavy consequences for your future, and this can be heavily seen in The Call–a horror-mystery thriller about how two people in completely different timelines made contact using a single telephone that connects them both. A single question is posed throughout the film: what if a simple act of kindness backfires to you and your future?
There’s something about Korean thrillers that exhilarates all of my senses, and this film is no different, as it laid down its characters and flipped them midway, producing an expected, yet still suprising twist and ending that made me gasp in shock. The lesson here is very simple: don’t attempt…
South Korea raised the bar so high last year with Parasite that they decided to release mediocre films only this year to balance it out with #Alive, Peninsula and The Call.
THE CALL is an exciting, creepy and emotionally compelling sci-fi slasher thriller, which had me at the edge of my seat for the most part. Tho it feels like a movie that needed few more drafts to iron out structure and logic issues, still a pretty solid effort considering it was Lee Chung-hyun's feature directorial debut. The performances by both leads is what carries the film. Also loved the color palette.
Oh cool, another movie that tells us we should kill woman based on supernatural/religion predictions much like Robert Eggers' "The Witch"... When will ever be a movie where the girl was just a victim and all the violence and abuse was meaningless?
There’s a fine line between ambition and overkill. The Call unfortunately crosses that line.
If you create a reality you have to follow the rules of that reality, otherwise the movie will be a disappointment.

Great. This felt so natural that I can't believe it's a remake. I loved the transitions of the surroundings changing around Seo-yeon, and it plays with timelines in a really fun way.
I was very entertained by this movie. I did however struggle with the ever so popular “let’s throw some psychiatric diagnosis in the mix to explain the homicidal tendencies of our murderess.” The diagnosis in question is an antisocial and borderline personality disorder. I don’t quite understand why we still have this stigma surrounding psychological problems and especially why they are used as plot devices. The antagonist of this movie could’ve just been a person who’s really bloodthirsty. Or throw in a backstory which explains her acts. That stepmother sure didn’t help.
There are obviously many plot holes but these usually come with time travel. I also agree with everyone who said that the ending kinda sucks (the post or mid-credit scenes).
Still, it’s quite tense, I jumped a few times and the premise overall was somewhat original (“The Lake House” probably disagrees).
Overall this movie is done very well from the acting, cinematography, and to the effects used for the timeline shifts. Speaking of the timeline shifts, it does those quite effectively in a Butterfly Effect type of way. What seems to lead up to a predictable ending ends up throwing a curve ball.
