Pride Month Challenge - Film 2: A film nominated for Best Picture with a queer character
The first half-hour of this film is such a tense, powerful and interesting experience. It expertly balanced a well-established tone, snappy yet natural dialogue, and creative intensity which not only hooked me in but left me with a feeling of warranted curiosity and excitement for what was to come. Unfortunately, the rest was absolutely horrendous. I understand that the so-called “big twist” happens within this time, yet I was very unsurprised and let down when it happened, leaving me with a feeling of dissatisfaction for the remainder. I don't even understand why that is even considered a twist at all as it feels dated and inherently offensive but hooray for 90s oppression I guess. While it may have its strong moment, this is far too inconsistent and thematically on the nose to be a good film.
The Crying Game is a compelling thriller with moments of intense violence; however, the picture really succeeds when it showcases its wonderfully tender performances, ropey English accent aside. It’s a shame Neil Jordan’s direction lacks a certain panache, with the film unfortunately carrying a made-for-TV quality.
Written and directed by Neil Jordan, The Crying Game contains some excellent performances together with a storytelling momentum that carves itself into a satisfying experience. It disputes the mainstream validity of sexual stereotypes and examines the subject matters of gender, race and identification, as well as collecting the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay at the Academy Awards in 1993. This film is an unusual mixture of romantic, frequently histrionic, drama and political thriller and also provided Boy George with his first success in five years with his version of Dave Berry’s title song.
a disjointed and self-alienated movie with oddly mingled themes of politics and gender put into an overhyped love melodrama at its core. a permanent headscratcher, that is permanently off the beat. the IRA thing seems to be only a postcard move while this is maybe an early entry of queer mainstream cinema? not sure.
only knowing this: Stephen Reas wiener dog glance always had the aura of a sad old man, he being pretty lost in the midst of all this cringe acting festival here.

This mercurial masterpiece of ‘90s cinema has now been reduced to just one thing. Not that its twist isn’t magnificent, but it’s certainly not the film’s raison d’etre, or its reason to be celebrated. It doesn’t explain why the film continues to enrapture, enthral and grow in emotional resonance as the years pass and the viewings rack up. And, unlike most twists, it doesn’t come at the end, but at the halfway point, meaning that if you’ve avoided seeing the film because you think you know how it ends – you really don’t.

The Crying Game is a truly awful film but I will say that it has made me think long and hard about my past behaviour and views on a couple of fronts.
I remember quite vividly when I first saw this. It was shown on Channel 4 one night when I was in the sixth form at school.
