I mean, yeah, if you don't like dystopian YA-fiction in general, this isn't going to be for you. The Darkest Minds is probably exactly what you're expecting it to be, and for me, that translated into a perfectly decent viewing experience.
My big complaint is the rushed and half-baked world building, and from that, character motivations get muddled. Still, the cast is so charming, and they play off each other excellently. It's exciting to see Amanda Stenberg and Harris Dickinson thrive in a blockbuster like this. Original or not, I found it very easy to root for these characters in their struggles, and my emotional investment in the protagonist was a genuine one. I was never bored, and I was always at least a little curious what would happen next. I'd happily see the sequel.
Call it a bad take if you must, but for me, this is about on-par with the first Hunger Games.
