tbfh im never serious about reviews but here we go:
this film perfectly encapsulates what being a teenage girl is like and how scary/confusing/empowering it is to discover sexuality and love. required viewing for anyone who has been a teenage girl because it WILL resonate. also required viewing for anyone who hasn't been a teenage girl because this particular demographic is almost never represented accurately in films. minnie is not the ditzy stereotype -- she is a complex character who shows the viewers that teenage girls are people. flawed and immature people, but people nonetheless.
we need more female directors so more films like this one can be made.

(i wouldn’t call this description a spoiler but it’s pretty specific about a single scene in the movie, so reader beware)
There’s a scene where Minnie is fooling around with Monroe and she playfully yells “help I’m being raped!” in earshot of an open door where a sailor is standing guard nearby. Even though it plays as a joke you expect someone to come to her rescue, and to have a scene where Monroe freaks out or where Minnie is forced to convince her “rescuer” that she was just joking. Is it weird for a 34-year-old man to be really into a movie about a horny teenage girl? This reminded me of the way I felt as a kid discovering CLERKS for the first time, where it was like a film was made just for me, with an honesty and perspective that other movies lacked. When you hear a film is going to be about a teenage girl having an affair with her mother's boyfriend, 'Fish Tank' immediately springs to mind. While in 'Fish Tank' it was an occurrence that brought the film's drama to a head, it wasn't the main premise of the film. Here it is, and it's a dangerous premise - it could easily go so very wrong, but I enjoyed this film incredible amounts.

a coming-of-age set in the 70s written by a liberal feminist. i hate that people didn't get the point of the dangers of predators. i think this film didn't either. while one can appreciate how the film tries to put innocence and bewilderment of a world slowly opening up through the lens of a fifteen year old girl, one must acknowledge how this film can come off as an irresponsible take to what true feminism is.
hint: feminism isn't just about reclaiming one's sensuality
