Under-specific, disjointed, overproduced, unreliably presented, overtly biased, and passively boring. There is an interesting overuse of the word Psychology and it's numerous suffixes, and an equally interesting complete lack of the word Sociology and it's suffixes in this picture. Let me admit a couple of things. When Mark Zuckerberg was being questioned by Congress, I tuned in for like two minutes and it seemed boring and I moved on. Lots of members of Congress don't know anything about the Internet. The idea of them making laws about net neutrality (which is only related to the discussion technologically) is absurd. The Great Hack has some relevant footage of the Congress/Zuckerberg questioning and has former Cambridge Analytica superstar Brittany Kaiser pointing out how he lied. So...political propaganda and manufacturing consent started with the 2016 election and Brexit? Could have fooled me. Guess they never heard of people like Edward Bernays and Henry Kissinger then. This doc is absurd in its presuppositions that private industry influence on national elections is some new phenomena, even the use of data (guess they missed Adam Curtis’s several docs on this subject over the last 20 years). The Great Hack is an intriguing Netflix documentary on how Cambridge Analytics illuminated the US 2016 election by stealing people's data in their social media accounts and used it to target ads on Facebook to sway voters using weaponized propaganda.
What I really liked about this docu is that it can literally make you paranoid. It's a perfect horror story of our social media culture. Our own online behaviour has been weaponized against us and has been used for political gain. It's a great eye-opener on how negatively powerful social media can be.
Data rights are also human rights.
This movie is exactly why we're all fucked.
The issue isn't firms like Cambridge Analytica, who everyone knew was populated by scumbags well before this thing hit Netflix. It isn't the propagation of dumbass memes or Russian flashmobs. It's the fact that almost nobody is properly equipped to consume, and more importantly, disseminate information. Yes, I include you enlightened liberals in that statement. That's a big, big fucking problem when everyone has infinite information and an infinite audience sitting around in their pocket. Karim Amer and Jehane Noujaim display zero understanding of any of that, presenting a puppet-show level comprehension of the issue.

part of me hates myself after watching this because even knowing that with the power of the internet and we're never going to really have democracy again, that still doesn't stop us from using the internet. because this is the place that connects everyone together but the scariest part about this doc is that tech companies have far more data about us than we even know in the first place. they used this information about ourselves for the likes of trump and brexit to even happen and god knows what will happen in the world of politics in the future, all thanks to the internet and social media. i'm freaking depressed after watching this but 100% worth watching to understand what's really going on with everything you do online!!

NETFLIX returns with another mesmerising and daunting documentary. I'd imagine The Great Hack would be better served as a mini-series, and even with the density of it all, this documentary is unequivocally terrifying in every breath. There is a ton of information it has to spew out, but with every reveal it has up its sleeve it gets more horrifying than the one before.

I still watch any type of "conspiracy" documentaries like this one and can't believe this is real life. It's so surreal but SO scary real at the same time, because it's simply undeniable and it's right in front of our faces.
I always wonder if Mark Zuckerberg knew, or at least thought of everything you could potentially do with something like Facebook. How you could literally weaponize it and use it to manipulate an entire society. It's just kind of hard to believe someone with his intellect wouldn't see that possibility.

Het schandaal dat gegevensbescherming echt op de kaart zette. Had gehoopt op meer inhoudelijke informatie over hoe CA werkte. Het ging namelijk vooral over de individuele verantwoordelijkheid van een paar personen, wat ik minder interessant vond.
