“Now, Jane, what can you tell us about the man you saw last night?”
“He's Caucasian.”
“Caucasian?”
“Yeah, you know, a white guy. A moustache. About six-foot-three.”
“Awfully big moustache.”
Not as funny as the first and I was soon to find out... not as great as the third either.
Vegan alert:
-Bad guy talks about hunting rhino in Botswana.
-Leslie Nielsen talks about eating sea otters.
Not as funny as the first one, and the subversive political undercurrent is mostly gone, but it's still as hilariously self aware, and the sight gags (the flowers and the blender) and background details (native Americans and zoo keepers) are as strong as ever. Better than most Obligatory Sequels.
Leslie Nielsen's Frank Drebin returns in "The Naked Gun 2½: The Smell of Fear." While the film lacks an impressive story, the laughs are quick and many. Blending parody, sight gags, and multitudinous goofy zingers, the comedy is a pleasing, sometimes smart piece of work.
The film revolves around the attempt of Drebin and his Police Squad squadmates to foil a multi-corporation plot. That plot is not much of a foundation for the film's humor, but the humor is enough to make an audience overlook the narrative.
Nielsen is in fine form, exuding a silly charisma that serves the film well. Director, David Zucker, keeps the gags and energy flowing, and the production itself is, at least, competent.
Sticking to the politics-skewering-and-parody formula of the original film, this sequel provides an amusing 90 minutes. The cast is capable, the jokes are effective, and the whole ridiculous affair boasts satisfying zip.
Now it's time for something light and fun after having Amour kick my ass.
While I don't think it's quite as good at the original film, this sequel is still a hilarious chapter of the continuing saga of the airheaded Frank Drebin (Nielsen) and his partners Ed (George Kennedy) and Nordberg (OJ Simpson, back when he was funny in a good way instead of now, where he's just a joke).
As usual for these films, the plot isn't all that important, since it's just a way to move things forward and keep the jokes flowing. The gist is this: President Bush, Sr. announces that his will choose his new national energy policies based on the recommendations from expert Dr. Meinheimer,…
The Naked Gun 2½: The Smell of Fear is not as good as the original, but it's still a brilliant parody-comedy. Leslie Nielsen is brilliant as Frank Drebin.
They don't make them like they used to.
After the phenomenal success of the Naked Gun in 1988 it was only a matter of time until a sequel would surface. This happened in 1991 and most of the cast reunited for another gags and spoofs-filled movie featuring accident prone Frank Drebin solving another case of national importance. Leslie Nielsen really has this role nailed down, it is a delight to follow his deadpan method of acting amidst all the mayhem. True, the story is only secondary but the gags don't feel as funny and fresh as they did in the original. 5,9/10
Hatte den deutlich besser in Erinnerung. Leider in allen Belangen schlechter als sein Vorgänger.
If you didn’t give this a 4.5 or higher than I’m convinced we watched different movies.
I love comedies, especially many “new” comedies, but no actors now will ever compare to the humor of Leslie Nielsen.
It wasn't as funny as the first one but still funny and enjoyable, just like the first one. Or maybe it felt that way because I still have the first one in recallable reference as I watched it yesterday. Putting that aside, I do think there were more memorable, iconic moments in this movie than there was in the first one. The running gags were more enjoyable, probably because that's what they are in this movie since this is the second movie in a trilogy. Yet another fun, enjoyable experience, this was.
This series has been fun to revisit, though the films get worse as the series progresses. Still, there are some hilarious gags here. I miss the hell out of Leslie Neilsen.
Nobody does literal comedy like Zucker & Nielsen, even if it repeats some of the gags from the original.
“Your coat, sir?”
“Yes, it is. And I have the receipt to prove it.”
The sheer similarity to the first film should make it super easy to rate in relation to it, but instead it just leads me to doubting my own rating because I can't remember the first one well enough to properly compare as much as they require. I'm pretty sure I found the first one a bit funnier, so it only made sense to rate this one a bit lower.
Almost everything good that could be said for the first film still applies. Amazing visual humour and clever wordplay jokes. Quick-paced jokes that could pass by your head without noticing to more ambitious jokes that take 5 minutes of screen-time, both delivered with perfection.
