“Poetry doesn’t belong to those who write it; it belongs to those who need it”.
Nothing else but a beautiful film from start to finish that finds beauty in the simplest things in life. From the main character and his love for poetry, his friendship with Don Pablo and falling in love - I felt so comforted and charmed by this wonderful story and it reminded me why i love cinema that much. One of the greatest male friendships I‘ve yet seen on screen and one of the most life affirming pieces of art that exist. Italians just know how to do romances right.
"When a man starts to touch you with words, he's not far off with his hands. " ~ Donna Rosa
Based upon Chilean author Antonio Skármeta's novel "Ardiente Paciencia," this film is actually a remake of Skármeta's own 1983 "Burning Patience," which is set on the Isla Negra coast of Chile's El Quisco commune. This version, directed in Italian by Englishman Michael Radford, moves the action to a small island off the coast of Italy, where in the 1950s the famed romantic poet and Chilean communist Pablo Neruda (Philippe Noiret) goes into political exile with his wife Matilde (Anna Bonaiuto) and becomes a local celebrity.
Mario Ruoppolo (Massimo Troisi), who is the son of a local fisherman, is hired as…
... 'cause if you really want to feel the experience of the most beautiful romantic poetry ever written, why not make a film about the poet himself teaching a poorly educated man who delivers his mail while he lives exiled on a small island. The most touching moments in this film are definitely the scenes in which Neruda teaches the eponymous postman about the beauty of the world so he can woo the woman of his dreams. Yet, while many may consider this another feel-goodmovie about finding true love, there is much more going on here. Director Michael Redford knew that when tackling such subjects he couldn't just let the characters recite every sonnet Neruda ever wrote. He had to…
It may not be apparent from my two-sentence entries, but the written word is so unbelievably important to me. I read constantly, my benchmark for each year is 52 books. I write not only for school but for pleasure as well. I am constantly engaged in “booktalk” and befriend all my English teachers. I still write to many of them! Words are like cells to me, they are the building blocks of my life.
I have never been so sure while watching a film that it would instantly become a favourite than I was the moment Il Postino ended. I think I might have had my hand to my heart during the entire film, I was simply overwhelmed by the…
Poetry does not belong to those who write it, but rather to those that need it. Life on Salina doesn't need the services of a visiting poet. It already has a poetry of its own (Neruda's pov). Salina is not an ocean paradise or even a quaint place to live, all Mario sees when he looks around him is an isolated prison surrounded by water, a place where no one understands him (Mario's pov). Mario chooses "Beatrice" as the only beautiful thing on the island, but with time and his own growth, Mario finally sees the poetry in the world around him (Storyteeling pov).
Beautiful film about an Italian man who learns how to express himself through means other than vigorous gesticulation of the hands.
After watching this, I discovered that co-writer and lead actor Massimo Troisi died of a heart attack the day after principal photography had wrapped, and he had in fact postponed surgery to complete the film. His gentle, heartwarming performance, perfectly balancing comedy and melancholy, is all the more devastating knowing this. He reminded me of both Charlie Chaplin and Harry Dean Stanton.
Here's a great example of how sometimes a more affecting film can have a lighter touch. Luis Bacalov's score may be overbearing for some but it absolutely hit the spot for me.
Also, I love a good coda, and this is no exception.
Thank you Mubi!
Il Postino is a lovely film, which was directed by an Englishman, Michael Radford, but had pure Italy all the way though it, especially in the performance of the late Massimo Troisi, who sadly did not live to see the praise heaped onto it by critics and audiences.
The story has hints of the Cyrano de Bergerac story, but its biggest strength is the poetry of Pablo Neruda, which reappears throughout the plot.
A genuinely feel-good production, with Philippe Noiret playing Neruda beautifully. The fact that Troisi died so soon after filming was completed should make watching this film a sad experience - it is a tribute to his gift as an actor and to Radford as a director that Il Postino manages to be uplifting and life-affirming instead.
il postino, or also known as the postman, is a beautiful film from start to finish. the minute you hit play, you wave of happiness instantly consumes you and takes you on an adventure on mario, the main character, and his love for poetry, his friendship with don pablo, and falling in love. what i was reminded about this film is how much i love cinema and the emotions movies can make you feel. when i first hit play, i was anxious (and had been anxious in the pit of my chest for the past week), and i was able to beam from ear to ear as the film progressed on. life is a beautiful adventure. life should take you…
The second Il Postino began, I knew I was going to love it. A first impression like this, you'd think, can only realistically be let down over the course of any film. Not this one; as it progressed, it further confirmed in my mind that I'd found something truly special.
The story it tells is uncomplicated and, in many ways, as old as the hills. Mario Ruoppolo is a shy, slightly dopey postman on a picturesque Italian island. Life on the island is peaceful to the point of boredom until famed Communist poet Pablo Neruda, exiled from his native Chile, comes to live there. With most of the village being illiterate, Neruda's residence is Mario's only port of call, and…
March Around the World challenge
Country No. 3: ITALY
Poetry, poetry fandom, friendship, loving families, Mediterranean island scenery, bicycles, parcels carried in cute satchels, love letters, romance, community, street processions with icons, the sweetness of ordinary people, naive priests, idealistic politics, philosophy. What’s not to like?
To pick one theme that sticks with me, it’s how powerfully one person can influence another’s life. Through being ethical, brave and authentic to oneself, a person can become an inspiration and a role model. Also, the potential epic ramifications of kindness and friendship.
Had to watch it for Spanish. Even though my teacher doesn’t know how technology works, it still was a fun watch
Peace.

"Poetry doesn't belong to those who write it; it belongs to those who need it."
A film centered around the love for an art, set in an Italian countryside where Philippe Noiret plays a father figure to a younger individual...A beautiful brooding romance aided by an out of the world score and serene visuals of the sea...Love, longing, politics and many other things laced with wonderful metaphors...No, I am not talking about 'Nuovo Cinema Paradiso' but a film as beautiful and lovable as Giuseppe Tornatore's masterpiece...Just that 'Cinema' changes to 'Poetry' here and I will come back to you one night, Massimo Troisi and Pablo Neruda!!!
Harika bir film.Üniversite yıllarında bir arkadaşımla seyrettiğim bende her seyredişimde farklı tatlar bırakan bir film.Pablo neruda yı bana tanıtan film
Imposible no empatizar con su protagonista y la travesía visual que propone su director.
